I'm sorry but to say people who can't spell are poorly educated is wrong. I bull can't spell very well and stayed on in education to do biology, I grasped everything that was said and was top of my class but couldn't do carry on becuase if you spell the main word wrong you didn't get any marks. So to answer the question no a spelling mistake wouldn't put me of a meet, I wouldn't be so up myself to put someones spelling before the person

We find poorly thought out, four word messages much more off putting than poor spelling to be honest. However text speak is really off putting, when it's more than the usual lol etc.

If the sender has clearly thought about the message (especially if it's the first contact message) but there are some mistakes - it's no big deal to us as we're interested in getting to know the person, not their penmanship.

Text speak on the other hand, there is just no need for it at all ever when trying to impress the person you are writing too.

That's a very close-minded opinion.

I have friends with both Dyslexia and a Masters. Need help with proof reading but hardly lacking in education.

Also, people who struggle with spelling might be a wiz at maths, or science, or something less academic.

Education isn't all about the three Rs

I'm not bothered by a little spelling or grammar mistake. But what annoys me is some of the messages I get that are so badly written - ie absolutely no grammar, punctuation or capital letters - that I just _iew it as total laziness and lack of effort and I delete and move on. Text speak just winds me up to no end. It is the epitome of laziness.

Plus I am the queen of typos. My spelling and grammar are fine, it's my typing that's shite.

Yes it is organic, but it just needs a bit of pruning. If we can insist on rules of grammar etc, we can insist on no textspeak outside of mobile phone use. Why can't people use a qwerty keyboard properly anymore? It takes longer to code your message into textspeak and then the other person having to ring you for you to tell them what they mean. Mad!

However I use spell checker and proof read to the best of my ability

I've never been diagnosed formally as being dyslexic because when I was a child the condition didn't exist. However on self tests ( via Internet ) i am numerically dyslexic

I detest 'text talk'

I also detest the mails and thread that are so badly spelled they actually make no sense at all

Spelling is important. It makes a missive intelligible - or not.

So

I'm a snob.

For me I need to see that someone is on par with me, not perfect but will do their best. Not trying in an email or profile for me, shows laziness and a complete don't give a hoot attitude

I think it's the bad grammar, sentence construction and text speak that most of us object to. We all make the odd spelling mistake or typo. However although the lap top I use most of the time is not terribly new, nor was it too expensive it has a thing called spell check. When I do make a spelling mistake or typo error, it usually comes up with a red line under the word, that helps. Sometimes it will put the red line under a word because it seems to use American spellings, but I can normally recognise them, (it just came up with one now, I presume it thought I meant recognize).

Now if I was dyslexic I think I would mention that fairly early on in any early introductory message. Just to make it clear that I wasn't some ill educated unintelligent type who's unable to string a coherent sentence together. I must stress my conventional education was secondary modern followed by a year at college and some 'night school' courses which were partly encouraged by the fact that they often got me laid. Not exactly graduate level then I will admit.

However many years in sales and marketing and working on getting laid has taught me that the words, 'You never get a second chance to make a first impression' are a truism. So if you're going to send an email that may eventually win you a job, contract, sale or shag, do it properly.

Construct it well, don't use text speak, (I don't even use it in texts) and put a bit of effort into it.

Touch wood it's worked for me over the years, alternatively you can be one of those who posts on here that you're leaving because they're 'al timewaster oo never cum bac wiv a anser toto u'.

I sit and await others to now pick holes in my spelling and grammar, I'm sure I have made several cock ups

Because it points out the fact that someone with a condition that affects spelling and grammar can still be inteligent,

As a couple we both suffer with dyslexia to varying degrees and while we understand everyone has different preferences on here, we hate it when we see people saying that poor spelling/grammar means uneducated or un able to hold a decent conversation. This _iew in our eyes shows the lack of understanding

Language is not being killed; it's evolving. That's what it does. I'm not sure 'doubleplusgood' quite works an example since the 'text speak' you so dislike is usually intended to shorten words for ease of typing. Your example is more an example of 'newspeak': a phrase coined by George Orwell. If you're interested in that, have a look at '1984'.

To be honest yes, it does put me off. I can forgive the odd word here and there but text speak is a no,no for me. However there are many other things that will make me delete a message too!

Just how I roll ( should I have put that as all one word with a hash tag in front of it)

For someone with dyslexia, you manage very well. I think Branson might have a secretary he dictates to though.

Some people seem to be writing in either some sort of machine code or they have left their mobile switched on in their pocket while they scratch their balls. I think the consensus is definitely, textspeak for phones, English for EVERYTHING else.

Sorry, but we live in a world where the majority of people can, will and do converse in plain English. We know some people might struggle with reading and writing, but there are methods you can use to make yourself understood. Nobody minds a typo or misplaced punctuation. But some of the messages on here are completely illegible. How a dyslexic person would begin to understand them, I can't begin to wonder.

If a truly dyslexic person, is having trouble writing out messages, is it not possible to use the software that comes with most computers (as far as I have experienced)that allows the visually impaired to dictate? It seems like a good solution, rather than everyone else having to decode what can appear to be garbled messages.

to be honest I couldn't care less about my spelling if people can understand catch my drift then that's good enough for me as I said I was a carpenter left school at 15 into an aprentership and got through collage to gain city and Guilds level 3 .. did that for 13 yrs.. so computer skills and spelling really did not matter .. and if some on judges me on spelling in a msg then fair one cos there not realy gonna be some one im likely to get on with ! lol but I have a friend that is heavily dyslexic and it really gets to him he see's it as a majore thing but he is one of the finest bassist's around!!! plus im from a family of dyslexic's and seen at first hand the misery the stigma causes !!! so sorry if I take it personally but until you have it you don't understand how difficult to live with it is .. a simple letter to write takes an age !! but yea modern tech is helping no end but I do truly see it as bad as racism to write people off for it .... yea a nerve was touched ( not for my plight I really could not give a shit what ya think bout my spelling im thick as shit and twice as runny ) but for the misery I Know for fact it causes ..... any hoo ... im done happy swinging

Text speak is really unattractive. Spelling mistakes are just plain lazy. It leads me to think that he may speak the way he writes. It's just poor communication! That said...if he's super hot....

As an English graduate (but about 4 decades ago now) I do notice the quality of people's spelling. It would NOT, however, put me off meeting them because my numeracy in the past had been highly questionable so we all have our strengths n weaknesses.

If I can guage they seem nice people I can overlook their spelling

for me, I dont see a difference between "I am not going to meet you because you spell badly" and "I am not going to meet you because you are not between the age of 18 and 35"..... see what I did there!!

a preference is a preference.... one is written, one isn't..... but is doesn't make it any less valid...

unless we now have to start giving reasons to everyone as to "why not?".. my answer is just going to be "because!!!"......

Sometimes I do as I sometimes use iPad & it does predictive text & I don't always check before hitting send. And it ends up something completely different xx

Part of that attraction of spelling in a judgemental sense is that it's one of the few things people can't lie about from behind a keyboard.
