Which Web Cam to buy?

Jump to newest

We have decided to take the plunge and after perving the good people on cam for long enough we have decided to take part ourselves.

However neither of us know much about technology so we are looking for some advice on which web camera to buy.

We would like a decent quality one for not to much money, we would like it to be "mobile" and we would like it to pick up sound.

Any advice greatly appreciated and feel free to watch our debut next Friday night!

Good question, we've started on cam and really enjoy it but having only the webcam built into the laptop makes it really restrictive with what people can see etc.

Will keep an eye on it his post for suggestions!.

I saw a few Microsoft he ones which looked good but weren't cheap.

Having tried a few over the years I would recommend getting one with computer/software controlled focus as I have found those where focus is manually acheived by lens rotation fiddly.

I am very happy with my Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 which appear to be available via ebay etc. at reasonable prices.

Can be useful to consider how you plan on using the cam as generally web cams are only designed to rest on top of monitors or hooked over laptop screens.

Now most times I want a camera in a static position away from the laptop and i therefore use a tripod. Unfortunately my cam doesn't have any mounting thread so needs to be taped or held on by an elastic band.

We use 2 cams. Main one is a logitech HD 910.

The other is an older logitech model.

The picture from HD cams is much better in any condition but you pay the price.

Just make sure the cam you buy is compatible with your computer and look at your lighting

We have a Logitech. It works great. The Microsoft ones are also worth a look. I would say spend about 20pounds min on one though.

USB extension cables are ok, but make sure it's not a cheap one as they tend not to be fully wired. Ie, they don't send power down the line, I found this out through buying one. It just didn't work with a camera, but a USB key worked, weird.

Lighting is also very important and will also make the picture look better.

So many people have a window behind them which is bright and makes them look dark. Light in front of you or coming from behind your cam is best.

If you want to get the best from a webcam then lighting is key.

The webcams mentioned here do cope well, but consider getting a AA battery powered LED video light, plus a great boon for private photo shoots. Can do things like drop it behind something to give some nifty lighting and without the pain of redeye.
