I (f) really didn't like them, I found them to be poorly written and not particularly exciting/stimulating though I know lots of women do. I appreciate I might be in the minority there haha! As a woman who has fairly extensive sub experience, with switch tendencies, they just didn't sink my battleship I'm afraid.

I remember reading a fantastic BDSM book once that I think was called "Constance", but I can't for the life of me remember the author or find the book to buy.

The main thing I remember was two "slaves" being tied together in a club and their masters playing a pleasure/pain game. Ring a bell to anyone?

Hope this helps.

The language and structure used in the book is very poor, it's just not written very well. The subject matter aside, it's as if a 12 year old has written it.

I couldn't get past 3 chapters of it, it started to give me headache!

A few months ago I was in the big Asda at Sport City in Manchester browsing the books section. A middle aged woman ran up, grabbed a copy of Fifty Sades and ran off. 5 minutes later she ran back put the book on the shelf and ran off again. I was really tempted to say 'Blimey that was a quick wank love.'

Found one of her books (Nancy Friday) whilst rummaging through some house junk.

In this book she presented a collection of stories from written by women across the world and it had me hooked. So much so that I had to throw it away

I have replaced them with more Erotic tales

I've read them and agree they aren't that well written but i enjoyed! Can i just say, EL James wrote the original as fanfic and it was picked up, good for her! She never claimed to be a scholar!

As for the others, I enjoy Sylvia Day but for me the Eighty Days series is too pretentious.

My other point is that if books like this get people talking about sex, what they enjoy, what turns them on surely it's a good thing?

Nancy Friday introduced me to erotic fantasy of women and opened my mind. The Story of O is brilliant classic and more grown up than 50 Shades of Grey. I also love Anais Nin books that explores the psyche and sexuality of women. All these books written by women has given me an insight into the sexual mind of the women. They are not only a turn on, and I have masturbated reading them, but awakened me sexually.

Of course you will have a degree in that as well! Ties, used correctly are safe, like much of the kit in BDSM in the wrong hands they can be dangerous.

But you, as always, are an expert and we will go away and risk assess our play. Well that's the RA done, we will continue to use them!

So what do you think is the best begetting? We are more into new testament and can often be found reading the good book as our little sub is tied up in the corner.

I read 50 Shades to see what all the fuss was about. Didn't find them erotic at all, just badly written.

Have read the Sylvia Day Crossfire books (all 3) and enjoyed them. But can't say I found them erotic or a turn on, just enjoyed the love story and humour.

My friend gave me quite a few Marina Anderson books and they were ok but all very similar.

Its boosted swinging & the adult industry by 20% so its not all bad.

Anything that lowers the prejudice swingers / adult industry gets is a good thing, we have had lots of vanilla middle aged women contact us to do something naughty after reading the book so we are thankful for it.

Like "Secret diary of a call girl" it has put life back into this stale Victorian nanny state we live in which can't be a bad thing.

To most of us the books are old news as we have done it & bought the tee shirt, to singles/couples who have never put their toes into the water they are horny filth which get their juices flowing.

Its aimed at a vanilla audience not us & it was very clever marketing on the distributers part in making them the biggest selling books of all time.

As we said earlier we get women/couples who have never done anything naughty asking us to set up role plays etc, they want to play out their fantasies on film/photos so these books have opened a can or worms for the normal average person.

I liked 50 shades but for the story not the sex

Love sylvia day much better writer

I believe wot made them so popular is woman really do want to be looked after n loved n cared for in every way but men have a tendency to let them down which makes the more independent and unwilling to put up with there crap lol

Men need to always make sure the womans satisfied all the time

I read the first half of the first one, and skimmed the other 2 1/2 books. I notice that every charity shop in Britain now has a copy, which tells me not many people would want to read it again.

I didn't think the Grey books were very well written, and the virginal washout at the heart of it a bit annoying ("I've got a date with CHRISTIAN GREY!"). One thing I noticed was that Grey doesn't seem to be a long-laster in the sack, but it might be me reading fast. But the Grey trilogy is just fantasy for women. Since the days of Jane Austen it seems that a lot of women like reading about heroines falling in love with a tall good-looking rich guy with tons of scratch. If it were the story of a hardworking postman, the Grey books would have bombed.

A lot of the Black Lace titles were actually better written than this, for instance some of the novels of Portia Da Costa (Continuum, and The Devil Inside are great BDSM novels). But if, like others in this thread, you are looking for a fine and nearly unknown novel about sado-masochistic dynamics that's pervy and challenging but is not porn, try Gordon by Edith Templeton (Penguin).
