Okay I need clarification. Do you mean herpes as in you have a cold sore sometimes. Or another type?

Quite a lot of people suffer from cold sores and I would assume they don't play when they have an outbreak.

Unless I am being totally stupid and reading this wrong. Which is entirely possible

I don't quite get this post either, if you know you had herpes at 19, why would you still have it at 30 when its curable?

I thought it wasn't curable. Once you've got it thats it . And only spreadable when breaks out.

That's what I thought.

According to that programme about STD clinic general herpes isn't curable and can still be spread if there are no symptoms.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV), type 1 and type 2. Both types are highly contagious and can be passed easily from one person to another by direct contact. Genital herpes is usually transmitted by having sex (vaginal, anal or oral) with an infected person. Even if someone with genital herpes does not have any symptoms, it is possible for them to pass the condition on to a sexual partner.

At least 8 out of 10 people who carry the virus are unaware they have been infected because there are often few or no initial symptoms. However, certain triggers can activate the virus, causing an outbreak of genital herpes.

Read more about the causes of genital herpes.

Who is affected?

Genital herpes is a common condition, especially between people aged 20-24 years. In 2011, 30,338 people attended a sexual health clinic in the UK with an attack of genital herpes for the first time.

Treating genital herpes

Although there is no cure for genital herpes, the symptoms can usually be controlled using antiviral medicines.

However, it is important to prevent the spread of genital herpes by avoiding sex until symptoms have cleared up and continuing to use a condom afterwards.

Question...if so many people have it (we've also seen the things that say up to 1 in 4 have it, and many don't know) doesn't that mean that pretty quickly everyone would end up with it (especially if you quite often don't know you do ?). Come to think of it, how do they know 1 in 4 have it if many don;t know they've got it themselves....is this another aspect of the spying that's been in the news lately ??

In a crisp poke on the A814

There is no cure.

There have been a few threads about it, and good on the ones openly admitting that they have it!

They themselves know when it is safe to play and when no to!

OP good luck with this, hope people are adult enough not to give you any grief over it....

no virus is curable, some run a "course" and you're rid of it,ie the common cold, others remain in your system forever and break out when you're run down ie Herpesviridae, which includes cold sores, chicken pox and shingles

So having had a good read up since the OP posted earlier I've learned that you can pass genital herpes on to a partner even if you are showing no symptoms of an outbreak. I didn't actually know that. Also obviously a condom doesn't prevent infection and there is no cure.

Antiviral drugs can reduce outbreak times and drugs can be given to lessen the chances of passing it on but no guarantee x

There is loads of research you can do into any STI, let's put a little context in here, gonorrhea and chlamydia rarely display symptoms either, which of course explains why it is so easily spread. When I was a teen I had herpes on the mouth (coldsores) I suffered with it for about 2 years, I am now 41 and not had a coldsore since my teens! That's because my antibodies have built up and despite many stressful situations since my teens have had no more episodes triggered! It is the same with genital herpes, after your first episode, you wil probably get outbreaks for 18 months to 2 years until your antibodies have built up enough to fight it!

As the antibodies build episodes are less frequent and don't last long, until you get to the point when they stop. Yes of course if your unlucky stress or ill health can kick it off again!

I have also just found out more about the HPV virus, I have had an abnormal smear test result and am now waiting for a colposcopy so they can decide what treatment I need. Apparently HPV effects 80% of us at one time or another there are 100 different strains, and for us ladies if you get a sexual strain which show no symptoms they say they can directly connect the HPV virus as one of the causes of cervical cancer. My smear was tested for HPV and they say it is present. Apparently it is one of those things as there are no symptoms and can sit in your body dormant it is impossible to trace where it comes from! I had an abnormal smear in my twenties as well and now I know more about HPV has made mw question how long has it been hanging about? So many of us have viruses in our bodies and just don't know until something like this happens, but if we all knew no one would touch each other for fear of getting something and that would be a very sad world!
