"Wtf is a v8 hemi ? wth? Call yourself a man?? ![]() It's an old design Chrysler V8 car engine. They used to put them in custom hot rods since late 50's. They have a nice droning sound, hence the phase "hemi drone" in Bruce's classic song "Born To Run"

""Hemi" = hemispherically opposed pistons. I thought it was the shape of the combustion chamber. Not into American muscle - lean mean european sports cars for me." I might be wrong but I'm sure the idea of the hemi is a centre mounted crank and if you drew a circle from this it should line up with the top of the cylinders and the bottom of the crank casing to help give balance for that perfect smooth feel?

"I have heard of horizontally opposed in reference to combustion engine configuration but never hemisphercally....it one of those myths that when you repeat it often enough every one believes ??? ![]() Like a Boxter engine a la Porsche , Subaru and VW. Some Tanks have vertically opposed engines. .

"Not just the American musclecars: 1960's Daimlers (the Jag shape) used to have a 2.5 litre V8 hemi in them. And yes it is definitely the shape of the combustion chamber that is hemisperical. " If the combustion chamber was truely hemispherical it would dictate an extremely low compression ratio...unless the stroke was so over square in a slim chamber ( thus reducing the swept volume)..virtually non combustible with normal fuels and air mix. me thinks somebody read a book once and got the chapters and words mixed up a tad.
