Something I have put up before, but needs updating.

As a general rule it is best to learn from someone who is experienced. Understanding tension is important and the purpose of ties can be critical. Therefore, check if there is a peer rope near you.

If you don't want to leave the house.

Books

Most have a sections on safety and choice or rope.

Two of those books were written by the Knotty Boys,. One is "Showing You The Ropes". The books are not my thing but people like them and are worth checkling if you like pretty rope. Unfortunately YouTube has removed most of their videos.

Although I am into Japanese style rope, rope is about fun and can be about sexy times. To that end I like Chantra Rose's "Bondage for Sex. You can find her in action online on porn sites in her domination of women videos "Chanta's Bitches"( not for the fainthearted).

Other books I would mention are:

Lee Harrington's "Shibari You Can Use" and "More Shibari you can use"

Midori's "The Seductive Art Japanese Bondage"

Lord Morpheus' "Bondage Basics'

Pete Riggs *Rope Bondage The Smart Way"

Jay Wiseman "Basic Rope Bondage"

Essence of Shibari by Shin Nawakiri is worth a look.

"Miumi-U Teaches Japanese Shibari"

is a recommended book.

Other books are "Shibari" by Phillippe Boxis which is in French and English.

As is the Shibaku books 1 and 2 by Peter Wettstein, the third is not translated.

"Osez le Bondage is a pocket book by Axterdam with French and English Editions.

For German speakers Matthias Grimm has his Japanese Bondage.

There are Douglas Kent's books, but because they are out of print they are becoming stupidly expensive, and they are old school.

"Bondage' David La Greca It has a good philosophical side

If philosophy is your thing "Discovering Kinbaku' Zetsu Nawa is worth a look as is "Pdychology of BDSM & Rope Bondage" by Sin.

If history is your thing the podcast and associated material of the Kinbakunomicon by Faviola is excellent. As is the "The Beauty of Kinbaku" by Master K.

If tying men is your thing I would recommend

,Stephen Niederwieser's "Tie Me Up!

For rope bottoms:

Evie Vanes "Better Bondage Every Body"

Clover's guide for rope bottoms and rope models

If you want a good holistic book in bondage and D/S and don't mind a long read, Mistress Couple's "Ultimate Guide to Bondage" would be worth a look.

If self suspension is your thing Shay Tiziano's"Tying & Flying"

If you want videos the makers of rope deGiotta, and also Twisted Monk used to separately have videos on Vimeo and YouTube as is Rory's Brainworks, Watts the Safe Word . Also recommended on Youtube is ChristianRed's Bondage Tuition. There is also The Duchy.

Crash Restraint has a good syllabus but a number of the links are dead.

I recommend The Rope Podcast.

In addition to the previous post: Esinem has online tutorials. Studio Anatomie has videos on bondage tuition on YouTube.

Ebi Mcknotty rope 365 is worth looking up.

Many recommend Shibari Study which is a paid resource online which I have since joined and it is good. Another online resource is Shibari Acadamy.

If history is your thing the podcast and associated material of the Kinbakunomicon by Faviola is excellent. As is the "The Beauty of Kinbaku" by Master K.

There is a documentary based in London starting at the Flying Dutchman (another site lost to us) filmed 2010 to 2014 by Bob Bentley (although now dated the scene has changes hugely) " The Pleasure of Rope' clips on YouTube.

For a different take on the history of shibari you can search for Midori's online commentary "

The History & Myths of Japanese Bondage"

Please support providers and also teachers of kink, especially rope.

Rope done badly can cause serious harm.

As others have stated, YouTube is a good way to start. We did book a half day course, learning the safety element as well as a few knots. There were about 8 couples from all walks of life, it was a light hearted experience.

Join Fetlife there are always meets posted for shibari classes on there. Not sure if local to you but I’m sure you’d find one not too far away.

Grab some rope, make sure you have safety shears and make sure they will cut through the rope first go!

Then look for something simple like a single column tie or single column cuff.

90% of bondage is basically a single limb cuff made bigger, using more wraps, or cinched in a slightly different way.

If you're looking for something simple you can make a none tightening cuff by using a prussik knot that you only have to tie once so it's quick easy, tie once use often kind of a trick. With four of those you can tie some spread eagle on a bed easily. If you're looking for something more decorative, then there are a number of books available.

If you like to ask more questions, please feel free to reach out to me via DM.

I hope this helps

I've always used bungee cords - far quicker and easier both to attach and remove

Totally second that.

Do a bit of research into what Rope suits you best. Not too much mind for now. Just something reasonable, user freindly and safe like you can get at most decent adult outlets. Again YouTube can help explain what's ropes what and advise.

Get a good pair of medical scissors.

Then just find the time together to have fun practicing tying up. It doesn't have to be all serious and like a scene. Just enjoy the experience of learning the ropes together. Just use Whoever is playing bottom as a training mannequin while you put on the YouTube videos and take it step by step and practise different ties. It's also a great opportunity for the one playing top to practice how they move or get the bottom to move and establish their position of command and dominance. As a part of this is the art of command and movement. It's just a really nice process to learn together as top and bottom or switches which helps strengthen bonds, trust, establishes roles and is just a lot of fun to share together.

Start with the very basics maybe simple single column, double column ties. A simple pentagram harness is always popular. Have a look, start simple and within your capabilities. Always listen out for any specific safety advise or dos and don't for any specific tie. Play around, not worry if you don't get it right first time. Just keep practicing. On the flip of that when you know it's not right don't just go that's ok. Do it again till you can get it right because ties are often done in a specific ways for safety and deviation from the instructions may not be safe.

Just remember walk before you can run. Job number one after safety is just nailing the basics. And a lot of the really cool stuff is actually variations of the basics done well. Don't worry about complex ties, suspension, advanced reading etc. That maybe for way down the line. And I say maybe because many achive great results with a hand full of ties and imagination.

And again the main thing is just enjoy sharing the process together.

I would keep it simple, so you can change position easily and it is actually uncomfortable to be restrained in the same position for a long time. I generally like short bits of silk rope, so no marks, 1.5-2m. Double the rope over, so you have a loop to put the other ends through when you wrap it around say wrists. Then pull it tight and keeping the two ends together, and go in the direction which keeps the loop tight while you wrap it around 3 or 4 times. Then separate the ends and use them to pull the looped rope together in between the wrists and tie the ends together. Takes less than a minute.

Same technique for ankles together or ankles to thighs.

If you want to use a leg spreader or tie to the four corners of a bed, buy some cuffs.
