I've got a fairly basic one. It's been worth it though. Used to use a beard trimmer and had some very painful and horrible moments with it

"trusty wet shave for me, gets a lot closer and smoother"

This! I use a Gillette comfortglide razor (other brands/razors are available!), and it gives such a close, smooth shave.

I get the worry about cutting yourself, but it's super rare and even if you do i promise it doesn't hurt at all. More painful would be catching your skin with an electric trimmer, because that will pull/tear rather than cut

I typically go with Veet, but am very, very careful where I apply it!

Failing that, a wet shave is next best, although to be fair I’ve never tried being waxed.

Just a word of caution about Veet. If your skin is at all sensitive, be careful and try a patch on your leg or somewhere first! I used Veet to do my legs once and even with the sensitive version and not leaving it on very long it still left me with what i can only describe as burns. I was walking around like John Wayne for about a month because even my trousers brushing against my legs was enough to make me wince!
