Old School Socials Anyone?

The recent socials we’ve been to all start weeks ahead of the social. Telegram groups, people chatting, deciding who and who not to chat to on the night, from the masses attending.

When you get there, several games try to direct you around to how you chat and function.

We miss the old style socials and are wondering if others do too.

Someone organises a venue. Controls a good mix of attendees, not a huge number.

You get told the venue just before and you turn up to a pub not knowing who you will meet.

You drink, chat, laugh, mingle, all with no pressure to join in a game or embarrass yourself.

You chat to people who you’d not likely chat to based on their profile or their online persona and often make friends you never would.

If enough people remember those old socials or like the sound of this type of social, we will consider creating one on the Warwickshire Leicestershire border.

So, please give us your thoughts and comments, and let’s see where this goes, if anywhere.

Many of the socials i have been to are like you describe and have been very enjoyable.

I guess it is hard to keep the attendees list private if posted on a forum board here as people will say they are attending.

If I was closer I would go to a social not knowing who may be there. I would just like to think the person organising it would be sensible and cancel it, if it was only single guys attending! Getting the mix right is the challenge.

Good luck with this though OP

Halloween Town , Stourbridge

We would love this kind of thing depending how far in advance we would know it was happening since we would need to book a sitter.

I certainly agree on the numbers bit, less is better, quality not quantity. Also, the choice of venue is very important - some venues blast music at high volume and then it's impossible to speak to people, at least for me.

I have been to a few different socials, some have had group chat beforehand, some didn't. I find it a bit easier if I can chat beforehand so at least I know some people who are going to attend. Though yes, you can definitely get wrong impressions from people's online personalities. I chose not to go to at least a couple of house parties based on the chat online. Just did not like how people were presenting themselves there and did not feel I would get on with them.

And games are good, they can break some ice. As long as you're not forced to take part until you're ready.
