If someone asks you where you are from...and you tell them....and they say 'where's that'...is it rude to say on Google?

Carlisle usually

Online I usually just roll my eyes and leave them to it.

In person I don't mind explaining.

We would reply with “it’s where we’re from”

If someone is making conversation and asks a question telling them to find the answer that you obviously know is rude.

How difficult is it to say "just outside X" or "fifty miles from y"?

I never tell them exactly where I'm from or live, but if they asked where whatever I said was I'd tell them, why not continue the conversation rather than come across as rude?

Thankfully most people know roughly where Bristol is.

Yeah, I think that's a bit rude. Why would everyone know where everywhere is, especially if you're from a small town.

But if you ask me "where are you *really* from?" you can expect a much frostier answer.

No but you can narrow it down to a compass point and area if they really have no idea where major towns are. We usually say "on the south coast"
