I have had some mail recently

where it's taken me ages to decipher due to text speak, also being called 'hun' every other word is off putting to me as I always reply in plain english. Do others have this thought?

learn it. many people like ourselves use 1337 speak due to the time it takes to write messages.

is it really that much of a problem?

most people use it not because they're illiterate just simply down to time constraints.

Sorry, but we totally agree with Jon. We find text speak very off putting and need to translate, which takes even longer than writing in full. We could understand text speak in a text message, but not when normally written from a PC or laptop, as is the norm.

It's a nerdy hackers language - mostly used to stop other people from understanding what's being said. Not something you need to learn at all, unless you're very, very bored.

I've made all my friends realise that if they message me in "text gibberish" they won't get a responce, I don't mind "hun" so much as long as its used in a conversation and not once a sentence. Whats worse for me is that they're allowing this text gibberish to be used on exam papers these days. Whats the point of teaching English and then allowing that?.

Have to admit the same - but then you discover it's somebody "old"

I work with teenagers and it's funny how many times they spend ages trying to work out messages on their phones.

Text speak was popularised in IRC on the internet (for speed type replies more than anything else) as well as when SMS text messages became popular and limited you to 140 charaters per message.

So rather than being one character over and having to pay another 10p on your PAYG for a 2nd message, people would shorten words like "to" to "2" and "text" to "txt".

IRC and forums are still a big part of internet subculture and increased exposure to and reliance on the internet means that more people are exposed to text or 1337 speak a lot earlier now.

Some of the most intelligent people on the planet use it (when necessary) to communicate. Doesn't make them chavs or any less of a person.

That being said, i understand the frustration and disdain many have towards it.

Indeed - same with all communication. You wouldn't address a message on here 'To whom it concerns' or 'Dear Mr Fucksalot esq' (hm although maybe we have had one or two of those )

So it's not about whether people use them, it's about appropriate use - and my gut reaction to somebody using it in messages on here is that we wouldn't get on.

What a rubbish excuse. How much longer does it take to write a proper message? If we get a message in txt speak it is deleted straight away, as it shows a) they are illiterate b)too lazy to really think about what they say

I totally agree with you both. It must be my upbringing and education or the fact that I had to learn English 'the proper way' but I cannot abide by people that are lazy and destroy their own language...I recently received a CV in text speak...went direct to my vertical filing!!!

I do find text speak unpleasant. I am not a snob (much) but feel that grammar has a place. I hate the "hun" that is often appended to sentences and would much prefer to receive properly constructed messages. Yeah, hun? Gr8. Makes me shudder.

Learn it? Not a chance! If people have such "time constraints" that they don't have time to compose a mail in English, then they're hardly likely to have the time to make a meet a success for me.

Yes, if people can't be bothered to take the time to write nicely, it's a real negative from our perspective. Obviously it's a bit of a generalisation, but it's also a sign of a fake account for us.

Hate text speak and we will not reply to a message that is written in it.

If you take the time to read a profile (ha ha I know not always) and find that you might have something in common enough to message them then at least take the time to write it out properly.

its not alot to ask, is it????

But surely in the time it takes to learn a whole bunch of gibberish, that only a few recipients would understand, you could have sent a load of perfectly legible messages.

I have nothing against a reasonable amount of text speak. It's so much easier to add Lol to a message to show you are joking, than to risk being misunderstood. I wouldn't ever consider using it in a first message though.

However, I absolutely detest being called Hun or Babe. Especially by someone I've never met. Instantly makes me think - I'm not going to like you!

Hate text speak! i can understand how it developed with older mobiles, number of times you have to press a key and length of message etc, but now most phones have a qwerty keypad and 100@s of free texts. And certainly a profile written on a computer that contains, "coz, l8r,wiv" or such would suggest to me they are definately not my type, so instant delete!

use text speak when it is being sent and received on mobile. Everyones different when it comes to how they message. One persons turn on is anothers turn off. For us, we dislike text speak, hate hun, babe, etc, and maybe it's time to bail from this, as we simply hit the snooze button to anyone using the above.

I also dislike it if a man says things like "yay!!" and "he he" in a message..,or talks about how "naughty" he is..

makes me think of someone camp not the assertive person i want to meet!

Exactly.. in a text .. text speak is fine. But in a message or email we expect full typing not text speak. Text speak in anything other that a text does give the impression of being lazy and sometimes a bit like a yob in all fairness.

So each to their own but people that message us in text speak will get deleted and blocked. As we cant be bothered to waste our time on the as they are not for us.

Just our opinion.

It seems like common sense to us that if you are going to write to someone in the hope that a meet will be agreed you do everything to improve your chances. God knows its hard enough as it is to arrange something!

If not why bother even writing?

Since its clear many people seem to have an issue with text speak on fab then the best idea is to write in proper English.

If you dont then the unavoidable conclusion is either you are too stupid or you simply don't care.

Either way you are reducing your chances of success.

I guess the conclusion is....

If you send a message using 'proper' English, you're not going to offend anyone. If you send a message using 'leet-speak', you are risking offending some people.

If you wamt to attract ONLY those people who understand you, then keep on using leet-speak (and don't whinge when your messages are deleted with no reply). If you want to engage with the wider swinging population, then use proper English

I think it's just a reflection of the generational gap between some members. While some text speak is clearly atrocious grammer and terrible spelling; it's even more annoying when people say they don't want text speak but their grammer or spelling are equally as bad.

Personally I don't care 1337 speak is a language that emerged from a growing internet as english is considered a bastardization of latin. I'm sure in about 30-50 years everyone will be using text speak or something equally as annoying.
