looking for some common sense and or knowledgable advice.

I have an 03 plate Fiesta (yeah, I know, not great but it's the best I can afford)

I need to change the rear brake shoes.

How do I do that?

I've been told that at the most basic, I don't even need to remove the wheel n tyre. I only need to unscrew 1 nut - the hub nut - and the whole rear brake drum & rear wheel bearing will come off as one piece.

Is this true?

Yes it is true but.......I would strongly recommend you don't attempt doing them yourself unless you have a good understanding of the braking system.

There are springs under tension and the handbrake cable to consider.

Plus if you don't get it back together properly, you're potentially looking at brake failure

You can probably find a video on youtube that'll show you how to do it, but I'd agree with magicfingers that you shouldn't attempt it unless you're handy with the spanners and have a good understanding of how the rear brakes work

However, my elderly father has recently taken his 03 plate Fiesta into his local garage for the near side rear brake shoes to be replaced. (70,000 miles on the clock)

The garage have advised him that despite utilising a "slide puller", they are unable to remove the brake drum. They recommend that they spend £200 worth of labour to "cut the brake drum off" and they suggest that "over time the wheel bearing has become welded onto the brake drum".
