If you have been exposed, you need to take PEP, not PrEP.

"Sorry pre exposure " I meant that, to work, PEP must be taken within 72 hours (three days), and should be taken as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours. PEP is not a 'morning after pill' for HIV, and it's not guaranteed to work. It's meant as an emergency measure to be used as a last resort, such as if a condom fails during sex. For pre-exposure, PrEP, it is not generally prescribed, unless you're in a high risk group or, unfortunately, already sero'positive. It also prescribed when the viral load is detectable without any clinical signs, or to prevent mother to child transmission. PrEP pills reach maximum protection from HIV at about 1 week of daily use, and reach maximum protection at about 3 weeks of daily use. Best to talk to your GP to get what met your needs, and learn about possible side effects.

"I see it has been getting some good press recently and I was wondering what you knowledgeable people know about it? Does anyone get it from their GP or is it private only? How does it work? Is it used like the morning after pill or does it need to be taken a day/week/months in advance? Is it a pill or an injection? Any additional thoughts?" Also the fem half wouldn't be offered by a GUM, altho the male half may if bi. You'd have to purchase on prescription, Superdrug do offer it online for a fee though
