Good old Freud and his messed up mind!

His term the 'Oedipus complex' says that 'a male develops an un-conscious infatuation towards his mother, and simultaneously fears his father to be a rival'

That said, there's very little actual evidence to back his theory..

I can assure you that my husband bears no resemblance to my father in looks or personality

I love them both but they're nothing like each other.

He assures me that I'm nothing like his mother too

Carl Jung proposed the opposite version, the Electra complex, where by a young female develops a subconscious attraction to her father and becomes hostile to her mother..

My suggestion would be that boys may find women who remind them of their mother attractive, or girls their fathers, could be because these are the first members of the opposite sex whom we ever learn to love in our lives, and it's possible that the embers of that first affection could be rekindled when meeting a romantic partner who has qualities similar to our parents?

It's nonsense. A lot of people have very bad upbringings. For instance a child of a wife/husband beater is not going to seek similar in a partner.

You would think that wouldn't you, but maybe some subconsciously do . A fair few women who had abusive father's end up with abusive husbands.

It's because that's what they know it's a fucked up safe place and they will never allow themselves to be loved thru all the trauma

Nancy Friday has written some very interesting books on women and their mothers.

Women on top.

My mother, myself.

Are just two that I remember off the top of my head, but she's written quite a few others as well.

Worth a read IMHO.
