So who out there will be getting the mudguards and riding until spring?

Any one out around Wiltshire, Gloucestershire or Oxfordshire?

Right behind you…. Boo

Drivers are bad enough in the summer, when the roads are dark and slippery I’d rather be riding at home.

I am lucky around here to have lots of quiet roads, a good pair of lights help to keep me visible. Unfortunately when it gets icy then I hit the turbo.

Mudguards???

Never used them, always prefered staying at the back of the bunch, till a hill came and I would end up ahead of most riders.

Good luck with winter cycling in the Cotswolds but if you do go out then I _beseech_ you to wear high viz clothing.

It is almost impossible to see cyclists in the dusk on country roads in Gloucestershire if they are wearing the usual black ninja kit that seems so de rigueur.

I prefer a more subtle urban camo colour, it stands until the snow turns up.

Road bike hung up until Spring. Just using the mountain bike through winter and mostly off road.

Can't wait until Spring and get back to long rides on the road bike through the Suffolk countryside. Can't beat it.

Winter bike does not get as much mileage as the summer bike, which is now slung across the turbo.. but nothing beats a dry, bright chilly winter morning ride (if the roads are in good condition)..

Agree with the "be scene" issue..but good quality front & back lights , even in daylight tend to be more effective than looking like an 80s raver

I mix it up.... got some fairly hard pack less boggy Gravel bike routes for the off road rides... I do road and off road all year... summer bike has been through my workshop and is resting until the late spring.... customer summer bikes in for the special lay up service this week

Only ice will keep us both off the roads during the winter. It's the best tick over training you can do. Winter miles = summer smiles.

Lights, guards and brighter clothing is general rule of thumb.

Not a necessity but if riding with others, most club rules insist on mudguards for the comfort of those riding behind you.

I find it nicer on my butt and bag having the rear guard on in winter, stops my bag from getting too messed up when commuting.

I'm out all year round.. love a night cycle round the woods in the dark.im lucky because up here in Scotland im a 15 min cycle to a wood that has a bunch of trails ...got big bright lights and there is a bunch of us go out..its so much fun this time of year because the trails are covered in slimey leaves and mud..get covered head to to in all kinds of shit..I'm maybe in my 50s but I'm still a big kid at heart..

I don't know if this is true but I believed the guy who told me this.going out in cold temps is good fir building up your stamina..when it's cold ,there is less oxygen in the air so you work a wee bity harder to get up those climbs

Steady 30km around Sherwood Pines in about 1h 50m today…

I don’t have mudguards and never will! Part of the fun is the mud! Plus I’ve never seen a set of mudguards that actually work when you’re off road… seems pointless to me…

I’m on my bike all year round, as long as I have the opportunity to go!

It's the opposite. Colder air is more dense with oxygen.

Gravel bike cyclist here, so more off road than road as standard. Definitely do less riding over the winter but a cold sunny winters day is one of the best for getting out there. Just need to be wary of ice, wet leaves etc. Always a coffee stop en route.

I got some road style ones I can fit with rubber ties. They need checking when we stop and I need to try not to kick them getting on and off, but seems to be the best compromise.

I run quite fat tyres, MTB would be best but I find them utterly useless.

Normally switch to the MTB and put mudguards on the gravel bike for the winter but got fed up with the mud and then constant washing, and I hate the turbo trainer but if the weather is really bad then it fills the gap.

This year decided to get some quick release mudguards for the spare road bike. Went for the SKS Raceblade Pro XL Mudguard, and they are working really well. If the roads are wet, the bike lasts longer without cleaning most of the time, and just needs a rinse off and new oil.

I don’t go out below 6 degrees due to black ice mind.

I used to cycle from the ugly house in betws y coed to llanberis every week day for work, over Pen-y-pass.

Did that for 2 winters and developed an allergy to road biking in the cold. My mtb is demanding bottom bracket and brakes so that’s not been ridden either.
