. All of them are rare enough on a male profile to be able to respond to all. Which I do except when the winker is clearly not within my stated preferences (sorry other men, it's flattering that you are interested but I'm afraid I'm not).

I've seen the same. I presume these people are winking because they find it difficult to come up with what to say. And it can be difficult to be the one who starts the conversational flow. I think that's why so many initial messages just say "hi" or "how are you?" or similar.

We use winks to show interest but having read a lot of posts on here we are starting to realise they are a waste of time. We like a wink but love getting a message as the opening message can say a lot about someone. We also always try to reply to all our messages.
