I actually did get Gum in my hair as a child, after reading/watching Violet do it in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. My mum was livid and sadly, yes, she did have to cut it out, leaving me with a very dubious hair style

Cold water - if you use hot water, the proteins denature and it ends up like PVA glue.
