COPD

Is there any others who have COPD on here, if so how do you cope? I was recently diagnosed with moderate copd but find a few things taking my breath.

Hi op sorry to hear this,I don't but my dad had copd for a good few years .

Have you got nebulizers and inhalers to help you with your breathing?.

The advice my dad got which helped was rest when you need to & try and break tasks down so they're more manageable.

Eat regularly though the day,as you'll be using a lot of energy just to function.

Use a fan of you get too warm ,that always helped my dad down.

Hopefully you will have a respiratory nurse ,you could maybe ask to see them if you find things are getting harder to cope with op

Sounds stupid but drinking water helped me. I had something which fell under the umbrella of COPD. Fortunately my case was treatable - but yeah I used to get breathless and weirdly drinking water really really helped with that

Many thanks folks, I’ve got the inhalers but not at the nebuliser stage (yet). I’m an ex-smoker, I stopped after a chest infection and done it cold turkey. He also said that as we grew up if our relatives smoked then they smoked everywhere which was true. I very rarely drink nowadays and struggle with the diet which Maya’s I drive large vehicles and work silly hours ain’t helping lol.

not just common with smokers its an issue with the building trade or any type of dust including insulation.

as many have found out with covid those paper masks are useless and building sites only offer them.

If you wear glasses there annoying as you cant see anything for them.

I never said it wasn't an issue in other trades however it is more common in smokers

Well done on stopping smoking

That will help massively

Can work alter your schedule so you can rest or take more breaks ?

Maybe worth speaking to your occupational heth department op .

I (mr) was diagnosed about 10 yrs ago, took time to find the right puffers to ease my breathing.

I do things at my own pace and stop when I need to.

doesnt just affect smokers it can also affect asthma suffers and breathing in second hand smoke also car fumes

Get as much support from your local GP practice. They should give you a rescue pack, antibiotics and steroids to take at first signs of any respiratory infection. Should also get access to respiratory nurse support, who will provide breathing exercises and other lifestyle related help

Well my uncle who's funeral I was at this morning neither smoked nor ever worked in any unsafe fumey jobs. It's your smoking assumption that pissed me off.

I didn't "assume" anything

I used to work in health care and 99% of people I met with COPD were heavy smokers

Also copied from the NHS website

"COPD happens when the lungs become inflamed, damaged and narrowed. The main cause is smoking, although the condition can sometimes affect people who have never smoked."

"COPD is a common condition that mainly affects middle-aged or older adults who smoke."

At no point did I say that COPD *only* affects smokers, I said "it's common in heavy smokers"
