I have type 1 diabetes and I have always let meets know this. I am just about to start using an insulin pump which is attached to the body. It is visible when naked lol, Would this put you off of a potential meet?

If someone has an issue with a great wee piece of tech that is literally helping keep you alive, I'd be moving swiftly on from them!

We have a few friends with pumps and they've said they are revolutionary!

They are visible and usually attached by a pouch and belt. Certainly shouldn’t matter.

Yes it would put me off. Hopefully I would know before the meet so I could make an excuse and not waste their time.

Probably most people would be fine with it. Just let them know in advance.

Mark her I type one diabetic and wear a libra sensor for blood glucose reading I'm always open about it if they don't like it that's up to them.

I had a line for Peritoneal dialysis in my stomach, then when I switched to Haemodialysis I had a central line on my chest.

Unfortunately my now-ex is completely icked by medical stuff so that was a bad time.

Now I just have 2 needles stuck in my arm 3 times a week having had a fistula created, I do keep joking to people that despite the Scottish accent the marks they leave are not tracks from heroin :p

Anyone it bothers probably isn't worth meeting. It wouldn't bother me as it would be part of who you are and, if I was lucky enough to meet you, I'd just see it as something that you have to wear. I am type 1 but haven't been swayed by the pump, so sticking to the pens. Am going to ask for a smart pen next time I see them.

Oh the munchies. I'm straight to the chocolate box for a Mars Bar. I also have dextrose tablets but they're not as tasty as the aforementioned choccy bar. I do feel like I could eat for days when a hypo occurs though. I think I may well enquire about an insulin pump.

And that's the problem with a hypo. I used to do that and my sugars would go into orbit. The jelly babies get the job done and I can control how much I want my sugars to go up by. Tend to max out on 4 unless it's really bad. These days I can have a bar of chocolate if I want one and still keep my levels under 10

I think I'll invest in some Jelly Babies. A very good way of monitoring sugar intake.

I'm lucky and get warning signs if my level drops below 4.0 or so. That's while I'm awake. If it happens during the night it's generally closer to 3.0 before my body wakes me up all sweaty and confused. It's an awful feeling. I have a mini fridge next to my bed with supplies of chocolate and spare insulin cartridges (Novorapid for meals/snacks and Levenir for background). Also a bottle of Lucozade. A few sips helps bring the levels up quicker.

very easy to spike when that low as it gives you urge and feeling you need to eat more to deal with the hypo. It's hard to trust sugar will come up.

I have couple glucose tablets then 2 or 3 digestives to deal with hypo

If anything puts someone off they won't be meeting anyway. Doesn't make either of them bad people, just not compatible.

My late partner used to inject 4 times a day, after food fast acting and before sleep slow release. The pumps I haven't seen but as long as you make it clear you have by either letting potential meets no or posting a pic with it on I wouldn't be put off. Those who are would be given the chance to say no thanks if your open about it and it would save awkward moments.

Good luck with the pump I hope it works well for you and gives you a chance at a more normal life.

If a diabetic has low blood sugar as in under 2, an ambulance should be called, both of the ablove methods are too slow.

A quicker remedy is to rub sugar into the gums.

I'm only Type 2 (although I was on insulin, until my body decided to change something and I went back onto tablets alone - could be related to my fucked up kidneys) ) so only had one hypo in my life, which was the weirdest experience in my life, I thought it lasted about 10 mins, the reality was 2 hours, and that was using glucose tablets and full-fat .

When I mentioned it to a doctor some time later it was them that said anything under 2 should have an ambulance called and under 3 that should be a serious consideration.

The plus side of the kidney thing is they are looking to cure my diabetesa at the same time as transplanting a kidney by also doing my pancreas, yep there IS a cure for diabetes, but its worse than treating the disease, due to needing to go on Immuno Suppresants for life afterwards, but as I need to do that for the kidney its a good thing.

Depending which pump you are getting, they are all amazing bits of tech. When I play I disconnect mine as I enjoy a certain type of pleasure and fun. It keeps me safe and takes the worry out of the equation.

Happy to chat further in private, I take it you have a wireless sensor too which would raise any alarms if your blood glucose dropped.

Keep smiling

Things like this only help after the fact. A hypo needs to be treated immediately with something fast acting, hence why the hospital suggests jelly babies. For a while I used fruit pastilles but realised that the jelly babies are quicker to chew.

A guy on a course I was on caused everyone's jaw to drop when he said he ate an apple to treat a hypo

My partner knew when she was getting low and never let it get as low as 2 so for her the peanut butter butty worked. I wasn't suggesting it be used in such circumstances.

I do not let it go below 2 on purpose it just drop suddenly and quickly and they dont know why. Hense the pump start. An ambulance may be called unless you have glucogon injection which is what paramedics would use. My husband has been trained how to administer this when need be. It saves an ambulance. Obviously any concerns he would ring one. I have no warning signs at all.

PS I have had type 1 for 30 years last 3 years it has changed.

A friend of mine with type 2 had similar symptoms to the changes you mention about going low for no reason with no warning. I gave him a few libre sensors I had spare after they switched me to the libre 2.

This revealed what was happening, turns out he had something completely different to diabetes

I wasn't responding to anyone in particular, it was more a general education to those that may only have infrequent contact with Diabetics, everyone who has to deal with it knows what works for them.

Wouldn't put me off meeting, my other half is type 2 diabetic, ex is type 1 with the pump and libre and I've also met people that are diabetic and using the libre, really can't see why people would be put off by it to be fair although it is worth making people aware just incase of a hypo when meeting
