"We use Snapchat for video calls and chatting, use WhatsApp once we’ve met a couple. Kik is ok for group chats and that’s about it. Whenever I go on it just seems filled with bots " Snapchat has been one I’ve avoided. I’m a parent so I don’t want to be using the same app as my younger generation But agreed. The bots on kik are constant these days

"Iv just deleted my kik and might have download telegram " Make sure you change the privacy settings and create a username and switch off your link to your phone number and address book if you want a fully private account It’s a worthwhile switch over

" There is an app called signal, but like you I use telegram, neither seem popular." I’ve got signal but it’s linked to my phone number. Can it be unlinked? I keep fab and the real life separate and I can’t see a way to do that on signal

"Kik used to be great, still use it but agree it’s glitchy and full of bots Never tried telegram, we both have Skype accounts so could potentially use Skype Would be nice to have a new kik type app maybe telegram is it, does it work the same as kik?" Telegram works exactly the same as kik but better. I don’t have bots and adverts. You don’t use a number, you can create an username (but you need to hide your number) It does more like video and audio calls. You can delete messages, images and videos after sending or set them to view once You can set messages to delete after a time period if you need privacy like snap chat It seems to be everything kik should be but the only drawback I see is that it’s not widely used. The other benefit for me is it’s not Snapchat. So if you have kids, they won’t be noticing you using the same app as them

"Just adding in in case others don’t know, when you download telegram, everyone in your contacts who also uses telegram is sent a notification saying you just joined, I didn’t know until I got one for someone else, I asked if they knew and they didn’t, just a heads up is all " Really? That can affect some people

We use both Kik and Telegram and as others have said Kik is full of bots but we also find Telegram to be very storage heavy!

Wondering whether it’s a problem. Telegram’s not an inherently “naughty” app, is it?

I only use WhatsApp , it’s the one with end-to-end encryption. E2EE Isn’t available on group chats either , this is by design as is the unrestricted size of group chats. Your groups are very valuable to them

"I believe that Telegram is a Russian thing so that might put people off security wise? Its the most secure out of all of them." Not quite correct: Telegram is developed by two Russian programmers who left Russia because of state interference. They are now based in the UAE. Signal is the more secure app from a technical perspective. In terms of popularity Telegram has about 500m users whereas Signal has 40m. You takes your choice.

"Question for you all. I’ve been using kik for many years, it’s served me well, however it is very glitchy of late. I don’t feel like it’s an app I want to use anymore but it still is widely used and very popular I’m using telegram now. The features are better and it works consistently. It still allows you an account via a username without providing a mobile number. Messages and images can be deleted after sending and also sent as view once. It also handles voice and video calls. It has everything I want but it’s not that popular Are there any other alternatives people use with the same features as telegram that are more widely used? Is it the right time to finally delete kik and move fully onto telegram or am I missing out on something else which does the job just as well which isn’t WhatsApp?" We only use WhatsApp - we've no issue with sharing our number with genuine folk, we will chat on Fab for a while first before we decide to swap numbers or not Mrs

"I just use WhatsApp. The more anonymous someone needs to be the less interest I have in ever meeting them." This is exactly why we use WhatsApp - we are interested in making friends/fwb so we aren't bothered about exchanging numbers with genuine people Mrs

" We only use WhatsApp - we've no issue with sharing our number with genuine folk, we will chat on Fab for a while first before we decide to swap numbers or not Mrs " I use my WhatsApp on my laptop. As much as you can politely remind some people, you do occasionally get content which isn’t safe for work coming through and I tend to keep messenger services separate for that reason In addition, there have been occasions where I have made an error of judgement with people and given them my number and that has come around and bitten me in the bum. I’m more selective at the point at which I share a number with people so I’m looking for the gateway app where you’ve reached the point of messaging on app, usually where I’m looking to arrange a meet up and increase the frequency of messages. If there’s a MF couple, it really does help to have a 3 person chat (to know there are indeed 3 people and not 1 man pretending) Nothing sinister, just natural progression and what works for me.

"None. " Likewise here. I'm content with phone calls, text messaging and a very low volume of email(no new ones on some days). Somebody, trying to be helpful, put WhatsApp on my phone and I've never used it. Now it pesters me with hourly bleeps telling me it is an out of date version. Passers by might hear me telling it to fuck off.

But neither have end to end encryption right? Only WhatsApp is secure Telegram aim for massive groups chats with no encryption, it’s pretty obvious why. WhatsApp limit group chats. You can use the secret conversation feature but not for group chats. Telegram allow huge file uploads, WhatsApp again limit this for security. Personally I won’t use anything without E2EE for messaging personal / private info

Signal is fully E2EE and is recommended by Edward Snowden, who might know a little about secure comms. WhatsApp as part of Facebook/Meta probably does significant traffic analysis and links it to their profile of you. So if you live in a Middle Eastern country that might take a dim view of unmarried sexual activity, then I would be going with Signal.
