Which messenger app do you use?

Question for you all. I’ve been using kik for many years, it’s served me well, however it is very glitchy of late. I don’t feel like it’s an app I want to use anymore but it still is widely used and very popular

I’m using telegram now. The features are better and it works consistently. It still allows you an account via a username without providing a mobile number. Messages and images can be deleted after sending and also sent as view once. It also handles voice and video calls. It has everything I want but it’s not that popular

Are there any other alternatives people use with the same features as telegram that are more widely used?

Is it the right time to finally delete kik and move fully onto telegram or am I missing out on something else which does the job just as well which isn’t WhatsApp?

We use Snapchat for video calls and chatting, use WhatsApp once we’ve met a couple. Kik is ok for group chats and that’s about it. Whenever I go on it just seems filled with bots

Snapchat has been one I’ve avoided. I’m a parent so I don’t want to be using the same app as my younger generation

But agreed. The bots on kik are constant these days

There is an app called signal, but like you I use telegram, neither seem popular.

Make sure you change the privacy settings and create a username and switch off your link to your phone number and address book if you want a fully private account

It’s a worthwhile switch over

Telegram is better than kik in every way. As for not being as popular as kik, if someone wants to chat they’ll get into whatever chat app you prefer to use.

Whatever you choose do be careful on the privacy settings and auto linking contacts seems a standard feature on some.

Mixing your private and general contacts is always a worry.

I know someone who accidentally shared some very private content with her entire friends and workmates list.

SC works quite well as long as you are careful with settings and keep a "disposable" email and username.

I keep fab and the real life separate and I can’t see a way to do that on signal

I can't stand Kik although I have it because for a lot of people it's their go-to app

I quite like telegram, but as you say it's not popular

I think Snap is nearly perfect for some uses because it auto deletes anything you type and doesn't store anything to your phone. Great for sexting!

My kids are mostly on discord so I don't play on there although again I do have it

We use Skype. It can be set up in a separate account so not linked to friends and family and can be kept separate to contacts. Can chat or go on cam. Many people have used it in the past and gone to newer apps so perhaps its ideal for naughty fun.

Telegram works exactly the same as kik but better.

I don’t have bots and adverts.

You don’t use a number, you can create an username (but you need to hide your number)

It does more like video and audio calls. You can delete messages, images and videos after sending or set them to view once

You can set messages to delete after a time period if you need privacy like snap chat

It seems to be everything kik should be but the only drawback I see is that it’s not widely used.

The other benefit for me is it’s not Snapchat. So if you have kids, they won’t be noticing you using the same app as them

I used to use Kik because it made chat flow more easily than on fab. It was great at the time but the constant glitches and bots caused me to delete it. Probably as a result of them nearly shutting down and being rescued.

I now use telegram and I sense it is becoming increasingly popular. Already some good groups and the benefits have been covered above.

When we downloaded it, we received messages from 'vanilla' people who weren't even in our contact list but had clearly saved our number into theirs!

We use both Kik and Telegram and as others have said Kik is full of bots but we also find Telegram to be very storage heavy!

KIK does the job for me.

I put up with the bots and ads.

Great for setting up meets and chats flow better if the other person is active at the same time otherwise messaging back and forth on Fab can be a bit clunky.

Open to abuse by catfish so, as with Fab, be guarded until you’ve actually met.

Yes I saw this.

I use my WhatsApp on my laptop. As much as you can politely remind some people, you do occasionally get content which isn’t safe for work coming through and I tend to keep messenger services separate for that reason

In addition, there have been occasions where I have made an error of judgement with people and given them my number and that has come around and bitten me in the bum.

I’m more selective at the point at which I share a number with people so I’m looking for the gateway app where you’ve reached the point of messaging on app, usually where I’m looking to arrange a meet up and increase the frequency of messages. If there’s a MF couple, it really does help to have a 3 person chat (to know there are indeed 3 people and not 1 man pretending)

Nothing sinister, just natural progression and what works for me.

You are partially correct. In Telegram E2EE is not enabled by default and as you say not for group chats.

Signal is fully E2EE and is recommended by Edward Snowden, who might know a little about secure comms.

WhatsApp as part of Facebook/Meta probably does significant traffic analysis and links it to their profile of you.

So if you live in a Middle Eastern country that might take a dim view of unmarried sexual activity, then I would be going with Signal.

"We have just realised that conversations go beyond here and we gave our number to what seemed a lovely guy, we are now being spammed and it appears he has shared our details with all his mates...

We have learnt a harsh lesson about sharing our number....

Telegram seems to be OK if you take it off fab "

Telegrsm & kik both work well as they’re anonymous

I use A1A telegraphy. Rudimentary encryption and with potential for worldwide eavesdropping!

I think a lot of people will stop using k#k after the crash in k#k’s software and password reset fiasco earlier today

WhatsApp for us. If we can trust someone enough to meet I should expect we can trust eachother with a phone number.

"We use Snapchat for video calls and chatting, use WhatsApp once we’ve met a couple. Kik is ok for group chats and that’s about it. Whenever I go on it just seems filled with bots "

I use Telegram, but I do not use it with anyone on here,

I never share my phonebook with the app as it will then let others know you have joined.
