Is it just us who find slang, text speak and spelling mistakes in messages a real turn off??? Cannot stand it!

It's a perennial dislike for some and always splits people - those like you and I who find it a huge turn off, and those who say you should loom beyond the text speak and might miss out on meeting someone wonderful.

Personally I take grammar and spelling as a sign that I will find someone more to my taste but so long as they are respectful I try to quash my inner snob!

Welcome to the 21st century....

Text speak is apart of our lives plus we're all not on laptops or computors.

Phones are soooo easy to make mistakes on plus theres the predictive tx

Education or the lack of it doesnt always mean someones not a good person or theyve not got manners etc etc

Ive met some great people some even millionaires that couldnt read or write or even dyslexic...... Look for the real person rather than judging a book by its cover

I suppose it's the more slangy words like dat instead of that and der instead of there for example. Not saying people who use slang aren't nice people or have bad manners, just find it a turn off

i agree wth the more slangy words, but i can string a sentence together but often speak in tex as sme times u tke the time to write a message and if u didnt shorten the words it wld take ages just to get no reply think ignoring messages is mre annoying than an odd tex speak 21st century after all

I don't really care for text speak but there are some people on the site that suffer from dyslexia.

So a badly spelt message to you needs to put into context that this could be the reason.

Dyslexia does not equal stupid and lazy. Met a few guys who had dyslexia who, in spite of their spelling, were articulate and intelligent. I am sick to the back teeth of seeing dyslexia used as an excuse for sloppy messages.

Absolutely NO ONE who complains about poor messages is having a go at dyslexics. So why bring it up? Utterly irrelevant to the discussion.

Oh, and yes, I do know about dyslexics. Been working with them for the past 18 years.

I think text speak is just plain lazy when using computer keyboards - and even modern phones have proper little touch keyboards so I can't see the problem with putting in a vowel to make the word complete. Text speak was originally used because texts were charged by the page to send so people needed to condense the message. That's not the case anymore so why do it?

I also dislike slang terms and patois - it just indicates to me that I'll be unlikely to be able to communicate effectively with the person using it. That doesn't matter a jot in a club when play is spontaneous and sometimes anonymous but for more intimate private meets it'd matter a lot to me.

Typos and basic spelling and grammatical mistakes don't bother me much as the person may be dyslexic BUT dyslexic doesn't mean thick so the general gist of the message would still come across as intelligent in that situation. Some messages with atrocious spelling do come across as just ... well ... thick

Worse still in when half the sentence is typed correctly then it switches into half text speech

Or if someone 'lol's' at comments not made in jest
