Heard on the 6 o clock news that it is estimated that in the UK there is over 25 thousand people living with HIV virus and don't even know about it as they have never been tested.

Personally I find this statistic quite shocking and I would be interested in others thoughts on this

It doesnt surpise me one bit, not everyone gets tested regularly and by the time they find out they may have had a few partners...scary.

Rates are still relatively low in this country but the current increase is amongst the young and the old. One lot think nothing can touch them and the other lot thinks it doesn't apply to them.

I would think they estimate it like so , every time some one is diagnosed with HIV they try and find previous partners and if they are untraceable they become one of the 25000.

I was in a school assembly the other day and the head said '25% of the population of the UK have HIV and don't know it'. As that figure comes to around 15 million, I think he misquoted or misunderstood the figures somewhat. The kids looked shocked - I was shocked. But clearly, that figure was wrong and it was 25 thousand not 25%.

No wonder kids get confused!

To estimate they probably take the infection rate for various groups who do get tested then, working from the numbers that do get tested, scale that up to the size of the UK population.

So if x percent of the 30-39 year olds who get tested have HIV, then scale that up to be x percent of all 30-39 year olds in the country. Deduct the number who do know they have it and you have an estimate for the number of people in that age group who may have it without knowing.

It's only ever going to be an estimate, of course, due to various factors, such as the possibility that those more likely to have HIV are more likely to get tested, or whatever.
