Has anyone seen how birth rates are dropping massively over the last 50 years and now even steeper decline... people should get paid to have sex!

Surely this is a good thing on an already overpopulated planet?

Government has paid people to breed since the 1950s. Child benefit is a plague on our society. The number of kids born into poverty funded by the state has exploded over many generations. The housing crisis is partly because of the monopolisation of social housing stock by multi generation families who are being paid to breed.

Or am i an arse. Not sure what the alternative is tbh

Regardless if the government funded them or not kids will still be born into poverty, at the very least at least the government is helping them

People are having fewer children because contraception is available, they can't afford more than one or two, they are worried about the future of the planet and decide not to have any at all, they need two full time incomes to live and can't afford child care for more than one or two children and many other reasons. We do need a young population to maintain an older population. I suspect attitudes to immigration will need to shift at some point

Short term bounce rather than long term trend

The increase in population, is more to do with ageing populations than declining birth rates

Statista is one place.. Spain is worse than us..

My point was that alot of blame gets put on young people having too many kids but that it isn't quite that simple.

Some working people don’t think they can afford children, often because they’re overstretched on a mortgage but sometimes because they don’t want to give up on their current lifestyle. Going on maternity/paternity leave on a reduced wage, paying for childcare so they can work seems unaffordable or undesirable to some.

Plus, some people intend to have children at some point but age-related fertility issues or changes in relationships etc. mean it never quite goes to plan.

We made a conscious decision to stop at 2 children. I would’ve liked more but it wasn’t feasible financially. We would’ve needed a bigger house, bigger car, time off work etc. The added pressure wasn’t worth it.

"Child tax allowance was first introduced in 1798 though abolished again in 1805. They were reintroduced in 1909. Family Allowances were introduced in 1946...."

There has been poverty and children born into poverty and much breast beating about what to do about the "feckless" etc, since time immemorial. We (British society), have tried workhouses, child labour, shipping people off to Australia, Poor Laws, food banks, vouchers and all manner of things. Yet, poverty-stricken and children born into poverty has still not been addressed.

I wonder why that is?

considering that we live in a massively overpopulated world and birth rates still outstrip death rates a decline is no bad thing.

Remember, more people = more pollution,

There are multiple reasons why birth rate is going down.

- In the past, more kids meant more people to look after parents when they are old. So they had many kids to also compensate for the fact that child mortality was high at that time due to lack of vaccinations we have now. That's not the case anymore. Most people have pensions.

- Higher literacy rate and career growth for women. In the past, women's role in the society was limited to having kids and looking after the family. Not anymore. Women have careers and they can't afford to keep having babies while sacrificing their careers.

- Couples who have kids want to give their best for the kids. The lesser the number of kids, the better quality of life they have

- Not having kids is not really a social taboo anymore

- General fear of commitment across younger generations. This already shows up in less number of people getting married. Same with having kids too. Having kids involves making sacrifices. Most people these days seem to feel those sacrifices are just not worth it.

Whatever their reasons are, it's people's rights in the end. We can't force people to have kids.

The less people is only bad capitalism not the world.

Indeed, because people are living longer, a LOT longer than even a decade ago.

ONS states that net migration between 2011 and 2021 averaged at around 200,000 per year, so relatively small numbers when compared to the total population.

Kilkenny, but Dublin is more fun

Believe it or not, it's a good thing. We're on the verge of a total societal collapse as like what happened with ancient Rome and countless other societies through history. When they become too complex and interconnected, things start to strain til it starts falling apart.

That's saying nothing about how off track we are as a species in dealing with climate change, with our useless politicians thinking a bit more green energy will fix things and still deluded by this naive fantasy of eternal growth.

Things are going to get bad, but if we work on degrowth and living simpler, restructuring the way we organise ourselves and live our lives as a species, it won't be cataclysmic.
