My first memory of stockings is when I was young in the 70s my mum and her sisters came back to our house after church every Sunday and they would all keep a pair of slippers to change into when they took off their church shoes.. They'd all sit there in the seamed stockings, sussies and slippers for an hour or two chatting bollocks and drinking tea and I would sit on the floor pretending to play with my toys but trying to look at their nylons

I think there may be more sussies wearers than you think, I work in offices in cities all over UK and definitely more wearers in London and Bristol for instance than there are in Liverpool or Sheffield..i have absolutely nothing to back this up but I think there's a north/south divide
