Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Difficult one. Some people can't spell. Some people are dyslexic. But I can't help but see badly spelled profiles and messages and assume (I know, its my problem not theirs) that they'll talk in the same way.

For all I know I've turned down the next Booker prize winner, but I'll risk it.

A fair point but the potential Booker prize winner can use that angst from the rejection in their next book, so it's win win. I agree though that a) it stereotypes people and b) that is my own snobbery.

Might be a generally nice person who just has poor spelling. They could be very successful and not rely on spelling.

Too many people in the forums jump on people for having poor spelling. Doesnt bother me either way

It does make me cringe as I am very anal about spelling (though I still fuck up now and again, I cringe every time I go past a post I did earlier today where I misused an apostrophe...), but I try not to let it affect my interaction (if any) with the messagee, I've managed to not copy and paste the message and/or profile and send it back to them corrected, though I've been sorely tempted on occasion

We all make a spelling mistake from time to time but some of the spelling on profiles is atrocious even the simplest of words spelt wrong. As for being a snob , yes you probably are just like me. Hey ho though

From reading you profile and other posts you definitely seem to think your above others and always seek assurances your not coming a cross as snobby when you know you think your a class above. You think reading a certain news paper defines class. How do you know the person who mailed you isn't a very successful business owner who has dyslexia?? You jump to conclusions over class and snobbery far to quickly, very hyacinth bucket(bouquet) don't you think

Surely that should be The Guardian and The Sun, both spelled with block capitals at the start of each?

That aside, for us prospective playmates must be polite. Being polite is about being helpful to others. Taking as much time as is required to write/compose as best as a person can makes it easier for others to read. That means the person is helpful and therefor polite. It's just simple good manors to write the best you can.

Simple spelling errors will always happen, but it seems that some folks are just too damn lazy to use the shift key. No paragraphing no punctuation. Even bad punctuation helps by breaking things up a bit.

My command of English is crap compared to others, but its also brilliant compared to other.. others

So we don't expect anyone to be an expert but put 'some' effort in at least!

It's nothing to do with being "above" anyone, but having different interests. I'm not sneering at people, rather identifying a prejudice in my own perspective. I think reading "a certain newspaper" defines our interests, rather than our class and that it is better to be honest about what you like. We are who we are. Dyslexia is different from just writing how you speak and using txt spk. Both are ultimately a lack of understanding about how the sounds your mouth makes relate to the alphabet. Try this: make up an invented word/ name and ask someone to spell it (this technique is used in dyslexia tests, by the way)

I find poor spelling isn't much of a problem. Not everyone is good at it for whatever reason.

It's when the poor spelling is coupled with poor grammar and text speak. It's not a snob thing at all. If someone sends me a badly spelled message but it's interesting and well put together then I'll think that I'm likely to be able to have a conversation with them.

If someone sends me one badly spelled, punctuated, poorly constructed and full of text speak then I wonder if i'll be able to talk to this person at all.

Ha ha! They've edited their profile and removed the newspaper names... People really are funny. I can be a snob and say a woman who drinks pints can't be that much of a lady and anyone that lives in Bradford can't be a good class of people but I won't or maybe I have in a backward way... I am an excellent speller and have had a very expensive education but even I make mistakes and would never look down on anyone that couldn't spell well, those things don't define a person or make them any less substantial.

Again, attraction for me is the whole package. I have to like them physically and most of all mentally. If they send me a poorly spelled, punctuated, text speak filled message full of words like "totes amazeballs", then chances are i'm not going to like them so it ends there.

Rubbish, all papers and news channels tell the same news and stories as each other, they just put them across in a different way. You used the reference to what you read as a standard of class.

You have said on another thread about profiles saying what they don't want etc, and that you find that off putting, yet you have your own demands, how about you put the same amount of effort into your profile as you do info pulling apart others, that way you might be able to show people your genuine by getting a verification from a meet

Just so we're clear, how would a tranny terminator work?

Does spelling matter? Of course if does! Take the following two sentences.

1) Aunt Mary helped Uncle Jack off a horse.

2) Aunt Mary helped uncle jack off a horse.

Now, we are one capital letter between a helpful act and an illegal one, so yes it does make a difference. Spelling mistakes are often just that, mistakes. However, when people use text speak or clearly can't be bothered to formulate a message that makes sense then it's the delete button for me. Sore and Saw are not spelling mistakes, they are totally unrelated words! Wiv is NOT a word, with IS a word. We all make judgements on what we read and that's how this works.

I make typo's, more so if I am on my phone (don't understand auto correct on it) I am sure I make typos when on my pc. But, I am well educated and can actually hold a conversation so long as I know enough on the subject.

I dislike text speak, I dislike spelling/grammar nazis.

If you don't like a message from someone, then delete. If you don't like someones profile coz dey talk lyk dis, move on.

Just because someone can not spell, does not automatically make them thick or a red top subscriber who can not hold a conversation.

I am dyslexic and get things wrong all the time! Does not mean im stupid! So what if I spell the odd word wrong? most the time I check words on phone before I write messages or post on forums but not always... You wouldnt lose me in a conversation and you would have no idea that I cant spell if we spoke in person. I can understand that you might judge people by there messages, but its what they say that is important not how they spell it...

Spelling can be important to convey information and communicate effectively. If the receiver of the communication doesn't understand/like/appreciate what you're trying to say then the connection will in all honesty probably not be there. For some people this site is all about physical orgasms and cock and pussy etc, for others it's about something else. Doesn't make either group wrong just incompatible.

I think the majority of people know this and appreciate it. You clearly take time to check and that comes across, however, typos and the odd mistake are expected, wheras poorly written messages are a different thing.

I am OK with missed letter's (can't type well myself) I am sort of OK with bad spelling, I am mostly fine with poor grammar.

I can't stand it when people use a lower case i (as in the word I) again I can forgive it once as a typo, but when it's repeated then the reject pile is calling

Couldn't agree more. Call it what you like, it still all boils down to communication & swinging preferences.

There are "spelling mistakes" and there are "this person can't spell, punctuate & their grammar is shocking". The former could probably be ignored by most while the latter can be understandably off putting to most.

Some people seek more than a gorgeous body & a pretty face when they meet. As they'll largely communicate via email, they can be excused if they judge potential playmates with how they come off when they write.

That said, I admit to be swayed more by visuals than a potential playmate's mind. Which simply means that while I enjoy cerebral conversations, I can take it or leave it when it comes to swinging. So if you spell & write like a 5 year old but I manage to understand from what I read in your emails & what I see in your pictures that you will be worth my while, then I will have no problem meeting up if the feeling was mutual.

Rubbish, all papers and news channels tell the same news and stories as each other, they just put them across in a different way. You used the reference to what you read as a standard of class.

I haven't had to read anything about Celebs eating an anus in the jungle or that people romping in Taxis are getting arrested today thank goodness.To say all news outlets report the same news is a huge generalisation. If you like reading the Sun, great! If you like reading the Times, brilliant! If you like watching Jeremy Kyle, you do that, who am I to judge. If you like opera rather than Corrie, I'm delighted. If it bothers you then there is little you can do about it. It does hint at a lack of tolerance but we are all intolerant in some ways.

For us if its legible its not an issue we are more interested in content and imagination but that's us.
