"I'm quite good at spelling and always have been but I know I make mistakes. I have two brothers who are dyslexic, one extremely so, I therefore have a lot of sympathy with people who struggle to spell. Of course I get a bit twitchy about bad grammar and spelling but I try not to judge people for it because I know it doesn't define a person. I think it's as well to check the panes of glass in your own greenhouse before you get the sling shot out ![]() This ![]()

"I can spell, most of the time, I just can't type at times. I personally know some dyslexic people and their struggles. Especially those treated as idiots at school and diagnosed later in life. But there is a general decline in the spelling and grammar abilities of the population. This is most likely the fault of the education system I think." I think we notice the spelling and grammar abilities because we rely on the written word far more now than ever before. Texts, emails, internet forums etc all require the ability to use basic spelling and grammar. It's unlikely that I would have communicated with any of the people in this thread pre 2000 and certainly not in writing. If I'd spoken to them and they genuinely thought 'are' and 'our' meant the same thing I'd have been blissfully unaware ![]()

Though we used to write letters, all essays were hand written and, degree dissertations and then documents within one's employment. Perhaps in these digital times people can rely on spellcheckers and Grammarly, so do not need to commit the spellings & rules to memory? I know I find myself easily forgetting things but know Google will tell me if I ever need to remember.

I wondered if this was down to teachers and lecturers concentrating on content and disregarding spelling and grammar.

I wondered if this was down to teachers and lecturers concentrating on content and disregarding spelling and grammar." I did my second degree as a mature student. Several lecturers commented on the abundance of poor spelling and grammar. They said that they used to have to mark the content. But now they had to mark the spelling and grammar too. Which, for me, leads me back to the education system lacking again I guess ![]()

"I have to say I can’t spell and was never taught grammar!!! There are more than one type of intelligence in this world. Kindness and not being superior to others Maybee one we should all hold in higher regard ![]() Which is probably related to some lack the education system. Spelling and grammar is not a type of intelligence. If someone is not taught it then they cannot know it. As far as I can tell we're mostly discussing the topic here, not mocking anyone.

"Do you think?? I would suggest that the whole point of the thread is precisely that? Sorry you feel that way, but I have not mocked anyone for their spelling." I've started at the top of the thread and yes, you're right, the OP was mocking bad spelling. Others have too. I myself was talking about why it happens, which is not mocking. I guess I ignored the short negative posts. So to clarify, I personally would not mock someone for their spelling. And you're right, the thread does have mocking at its core ![]()

You are clearly a very decent human being and I’m not saying the others are not!!!! (Stepping over Forum minefields)
