Thinking about studland in the summer. Does anyone ever stay in Bournemouth and ferry across for the day?

I’m sure many do, theres a nice hotel on the Studland side though that you might want to check out , Knoll Beach hotel

Thanks Jaime. We'd be heading from Kent, so staying in Bournemouth knocks about 45ish minutes off the drive and means we might spend time in both places. No harm in checking that hotel out though - thanks.

We're intrigued to find out if others have done the same as what we're thinking, and how much of a pain in the arse it was.

If you do that need to be on the ferry early in the morning as it will be busy if the weather is good

No worries, just be wary about how long the queue can be for the ferry in the high season in particular. Waits of 2-3 hours are not uncommon for a nice weekend in summer holidays but much less midweek and outside of school holidays.

I’m probably making it sound worse than it is, I usually come from the other direction, through Wareham and Corte Castle rather than through Poole and Sandbanks

if you are stopping Bournemouth side I would park near sandbanks and go over the ferry as a foot passenger, only a short walk to naturist beach and avoid all the traffic jams !

Ferry as a foot passenger might be a good way to avoid traffic/parking issues on a particular busy summers day.

The chain ferry has been more out of action and not running, than it's been working in the last few years. Not just because of covid. So can't reply on it. It's quite a trip round by road if you have to take the long way.

I live in Bournemouth and park on Sandbanks and foot ferry over.

The walk is a little further but there’s no queuing either side.

We are going on the 30th april, will book a hotel nearby hoping to meet some of you guys in the dunes and mybe back to our hotel

We went down in the school summer hols last year and got the ferry across with the car from Sandbanks. I think we waited about 30 mins so wasn’t too bad and we managed to get a parking spot ok. It was a warm day but midweek in the afternoon. I suspect the weekends are much busier.

We spent a couple of afternoons on the beach and really enjoyed it. We are hoping to visit again this summer.

Or ….If you fancy a more scenic route, take the road round to Corfe Castle (via Wareham.) Turn right into New Road B3351, there’s a viewing point for the most amazing views of Bournemouth, Sandbanks and Poole. (Plus, there’s lots of secluded places to stop off for some ‘ahem’ ‘ahem’ .. ‘private time’ for the two of you.

We've been a few times taking the ferry from sandbanks it's always been out of school holidays and generally midweek so longest wait was 30 mins or so. Well worth it to spend time on that fabulous beach and have a wander in the dunes ??

It certainly can get very busy and the ferry can have huge queues. I grew up there and traffic was always a nightmare around Wareham and Corfe, it got better once the rail bridge was built, but it's a tourist trap. We never let the farm in the summer unless it was on a bike. It's a lovely area as long as you can cope with holiday traffic. Studland is a great beach, watch out for the parking charges. xx

They put white lines along Ferry Road and asked people to park within them.

There is actually more room than before as the lines are on the road whereas before people parked completely off the road on the dirt.

The council will tow away anybody not parked within the lines.

Although I didn’t see it myself, I heard that the cars that were towed were parked ridiculously and some across gates and openings.

There shouldn’t be any problems parking as long as you arrive early enough.

Ah, that makes more sense. I was thinking that for the most part there’s loads of room along there. I guess it’s more once you start heading towards studland village itself when it starts getting narrow etc

Yes. The lines don’t go that far.

There were lots of problems in lockdown summer 2020. The place was rammed and people were parking in ridiculous places. That must have prompted the white lines.

Last summer I started to park at Sandbanks and foot ferry over. Saved the parking stress and queues for the ferry.

I used to go across the ferry every day in the summer, I worked at the cafe and boatyard. On foot or a push bike it's fine. In a car it can be a nightmare on season. Staying on the Corfe side and heading over to b'mth in the evening could be a better option.

We were almost always there if it was warm (21'c up) and sunny in 2020, and twice last year. That was around 30 days.

Always find it easier to by-pass Bournemouth and to drive to Corfe via the Wareham route. And take the Salisbury route if it's a packed day (any consecutive days above 25'c, specially wkends).

And be there (latest is 10am), if you want reasonable parking at Ferry road, else it's a long walk along the road just to get to the trail. So the rooms and camping sites in Swanage becomes important since it's just a 10min drive to Studland.

We go glamping, but there's lots of hotel rooms, rentals, and camp lodges in Purebeck. Burnbake is the best campsite.

We have a lovely hotel near knoll beach for friday 29th april, hope to see some of you in the dunes with lots of suntan oil, can amyone do my back ..... ohhh and frint whist your hands are all oily

Take a paddle board with you - knoll beach to old Harry rocks is awesome

I’ve kayaked out to Harry rocks a few times and it’s a really nice trip

No - Knowle beach is also a very well travelled spot for stand up paddle boarding and kayaking - multi tasking see
