Fair enough, I guess you have your views. I'm barely interested in the racing, mainly there for the social activities.

I'm shuddering at the thought! Wonder how many will die? All in the name of "sport"

40 horses to run as a bunch, with riders hovering on their backs trying not to get squashed or trapped, flying over the biggest jumps in jump racing…. Accident waiting to happen.

Don’t get me wrong I love all horses whatever their breeding & jobs but there are things I don’t agree with. And this is one of them.

How many jockeys have actually been injured or died participating in this race? How many horses have ended up with a bust leg or worse broken neck needing to be shot on the track? Best thing about this is, it’s a quick death, but many of the horses who suffered a broken leg could have been saved, could have gone on to live a normal healthy ridden life, but racing is about money, not the love for horses. It’s money money money. The horse might be worth a lot while alive, but don’t be fooled, it will also be worth a lot dead, as they are insured for it. They would get less insurance back if the horse was PTS back at home in its familiar stable with the grooms it knows or on the training gallops. But if it should be PTS while on the track, the pay back is a lot more, because it was doing it job at the time.

Its not quick though. They have to arrive at the horse, screen it off, check it then shoot it. Itll be in agony all that time. Not enough jockeys get seriously hurt, cuz if they got injured or killed at the same rate as the horses, itd be stopped straight away,

Is that all horse racing or does that include greyhound racing too? Greyhound racing isn’t squeaky clean either, plus there also lesser known Arab horse racing.

i'm not a lover of forcing a horse to run and jump etc

it cant tell you its got a toothache or earache, upset tummy , feeling under the weather , stiff joints etc etc ..

bit cruel really

lets face it if you left the horses on the track with no rider , no way would they run and jump , theyd relax eat grass and stroll around a bit.

One jockey has died in this race,

Horses that have broken a leg simply cannot be saved, if a human breaks their leg after treatment for the injury what do you do? rest and keep the weight off the leg until the fracture heals, how do you propose to get a horse to do this, it simply cannot be done, the simple fact is a horses leg is so delicate once its broken it cannot be treated and the humane thing to do is put the horse down, usually at great upset to all those involved with the creature, but hey dont let simple facts get in the way.

Simple fact aswell are horses skeletons are not strong enough to be put through racing till around 4 years old, so why do they run 2 year olds, bearing in mind the training needed before running. Also regarding the leg break, its the fact theyre put in the position in the 1st place. No one ever mentions lung bleed, or burst vessels in the eyes though due to extreme stresses on them being forced to run to the ABSOLUTE limit. The whole thing is a barbarity, and all for money, and so women can buy a new hat, go and get pissed and think theyre in miss world or something

Yep. The only difference being that if you had a pet greyhound and let it off the lead, the 1st thing itll do is run, and then run some more. Horses without jockeys, eat grass and mooch about

Age. That’s not even true most horses aren’t mature enough to do any hard ridden work til they are around 5. Heavier breeds aren’t at skeletal/muscle maturity until around 7 years old.

Certainly a TB should not be getting sat on at just a year old, never mind raced at 2 & that’s flat racing. Some are bred purely for jump racing which is slightly better as they are allowed to mature somewhat more than the flat racers, even with a successful racing life they can be done by 4/5 years old. The lucky ones are sold on or sent to a TB rehabilitation yard so they can be retrained but that’s hard if all they know is galloping in a semi straight line.

My niece has an ex racer, she was a brood mare but after having colic both times after foaling, it was decided to find her a new home.

Some go on to become point to pointers or hunt racers (Grand national), the unlucky ones or the ones who don’t make the racing grade are sent to slaughter.

Where did you get that info from? Race horses are actually treated very well, huge stables, best food, twice daily grooming, some even get a weekly can of Guinness. If they were treated badly it would show in their health

Where ever I lay my hat

Fatalities are fortunately quite rare and most horses in training are very well looked after. The industry contributes about £5bn to the UK economy and supports over 100,000 jobs. I'm sure there are some rogues out there but the industry is pretty well regulated.

Approximately 200 horses die every year on British racecourses...221 in the year 2021. A horse's heartbeat can increase tenfold during a race – from 25 beats per minute to an excessive 250 beats – leading to total exhaustion and sometimes collapse, in the hot weather some collapse of heat exhaustion. Far too many are bred but are not raced and mostly end up at the abattoir. Some trainers and even the really well known trainers will continue to train them when they have a air line fracture...this putting the bones at risk of snapping when put under stress on the gallops or racing on the track. A new law is that any Racehorse is no longer able to be sold for human consumption...meaning a injured horse can be treated with the correct pain relief that is poisonous to humans..That law itself tells you what has been going on behind the scenes!

What absolute nonsense..

I have worked in the racing industry and I can tell you a lot of racehorses are treated much better than a lot of children..Diet, exercise and they have a lovely warm safe bed for the night..They are bred for racing..

I’ve had a dog, I currently have two cats. I have ridden horses since the age of 7, I worked with horses within an Arab Stud yard, tho we’re also had two Arab racing ponies and an Arab dressage, I then worked in the riding school where I originally learnt to ride. After that, I had horses on loan. I stopped riding due to health issues in 2012. Even went back to riding and competing after a life changing riding related accident in 1993. I think I know a thing or two about horses and aspects of all the disciplines and yes, racing.

BS! Any horse sent for slaughter does not enter the human food chain in the UK simply because we do not eat horses. Unless they are shipped to France. Horses slaughtered here usually end up in dog food. It’s always been a vets practice not to give drugs to a horse if the owner intends to have them enter the food chain. They will have the owner sign a document so they have proof that the owner was aware of this when the drug is administered.

Another way of euthanising a horse is by taking it to a hunt yard, the horse is then shot by a hunt master and fed to the dogs. Obviously they need to have a certificate that says they have been cleared of any drugs in their body

I never stated that they stay in the UK as I know we do not eat Horse meat...the carcass get's shipped to the EU and Brazil. There are 2 abattoirs in the UK that are licensed to take Horses in, Chester and Devon way, they take Horses shipped over alive from Ireland too, strict rules are supposed to be followed...No animal is to see another shot, the gun is to be held directly to the head, No animal should be left in pain....Both these abattoirs have been found to break these rules and have both been prosecuted for that.

Did you see abuse and mistreatment?"

No never, not in the two establishments where I worked.

Also in the riding school, the husband of the couple raced trotters in Sulkys, again those horses were impeccably looked after, not by us, but they had their own grooms.

I once saw a donkey alone in a field with overgrown hooves when I was about 14, out on a hack. I told the RS owner about it and the location, she went out of her way to see robots predicament and sought help for it. She didn’t have to it wasn’t her animals but she did so anyway.

Another time when I was 21/22, I came across a mare and her daughter (she was over a year old) in a postage size stamp muddy field. On holiday. I was talking to the owner & was horrified to learn that the father of the yearling was a stallion that was currently on loan to the Arab Stud yard where I worked. I reported them to the SSPCA on my return. The last thing I heard was both had been seized from the owner as both were underweight. That same lady stole a friends horse a few moths later. She also went on holiday leaving her dogs and cats in the house with no one to look after h the them. When she got back the cats were dead and half eaten by the dogs. After that her house was repossessed by the bank and I believe she ended up in a mental institution. It’s a shame in a way that she had mental health issues but she was also a loner so no one knew.

Greed is a nasty thing!! Us humans are truly vile!! x"

"Anyone planning to be at Aintree on 9th April?

Yes, in protest its still allowed to happen, along with any other form of horse racing

the horses are treated like shit, like greyhounds"

I have to disagree, most greyhound trainers lover their dogs , there treated like athletes with correct diet and exercise. Have you ever seen a van being loaded with dogs going to race ? The dogs absolutely love it. What the increasing population of puppy farmed designer breeds with health issues from poor breeding for maximum profit would say those dogs are treated like shit.

Where did you get that info from? Race horses are actually treated very well, huge stables, best food, twice daily grooming, some even get a weekly can of Guinness. If they were treated badly it would show in their health

I got it from facts, not by making excuses for animal cruelty to continue."

Facts - so not based on experience

Those that breed, train & race greyhounds are very few in between that actually love the dogs, they love the money they win, but if they don’t win, many are taken round the back of the building with a guy who has been asked to ‘dispose’ of them doesn’t happen everywhere some lucky ones are handed over to greyhound rescues, those that aren’t are badly disposed of many maimed and left to die. I know this as have friends who work tirelessly to try and save them from that fate.

They are not treated like athletes they are treated like commodities and got rid of the minute they stop winning

These kinda posts are great because you can block the people complicit with the murder of animals for what. Sport? Hardly. Dogs and horses deserve worker’s rights too and the racing/hunting industries need to catch up with the rest of the animal employment world before they go the way of the dodo. Which would be nice.

Horses and dogs are pushed to the limit, given performance enhancing drugs and as Jess said, they are commodities who’ll be disposed of when they aren’t able to produce. While there are a few, too few, trainers who do look after their charges they’re very much in the minority and the majority don’t much care for the law in regard to animal welfare.

The absolute nonsense spouted on this thread defies logic. Where do these so called "facts" come from?PETA websites who colour anything to suit their agenda? Gies peace. Yes 200 average a year lose their lives and every single one of them will be missed by owners, trainers, stable staff, etc but in the grand scheme of things thats about a 0.20% death rate per runner and this nonsense about making a horse do anything, Ever tried to make a half tonne animal do something it doesn't want to do? Ever seen a horse fall, get up and follow the rest, jumping along the way? But according to some on here it's being forced to do it,by who,if the jockey is on the grass already?

Go to any trainers open day and see how the horses are treated. 2 or 3 feeds a day depending on routine, plenty hay and water, warm dry bedding, dry stables, rugs when it's cold, veterinary care as soon as its needed, routine check ups,the list is endless. There's people in this country would love to have even a 10th of the care and attention that is lavished on racehorses.

Dont dare stand at a race meeting and say its cruel and they are mistreated when you obviously have no clue what happens behind the scenes apart from what the anti brigade say happens. Go on an anti horse racing forum and post a message showing any form of support for horse racing and see what happens. Message deleted and you are blocked. Cant have a reasoned argument with them because the REAL facts don't suit their agenda and they just end up screaming and shouting.

I'm all for argument for and against but at least have an argument with information from all sides rather than the one that you support.

It’s really easy to measure serum and urine levels cortisol in racing horses and dogs. In the testing programs at Newmarket (horses) and Peterborough (greyhounds and whippets) Cortisol levels are persistently way beyond safe parameters, indicating high stress. Take the same animals out of that environment and they return to somewhere near normal within 6 months, barring any acquired psychological pathology. I’ll remind you it isn’t sport, simply because in sport the participants make an informed decision to take part.

"i'm not a lover of forcing a horse to run and jump etc

it cant tell you its got a toothache or earache, upset tummy , feeling under the weather , stiff joints etc etc ..

bit cruel really

lets face it if you left the horses on the track with no rider , no way would they run and jump , theyd relax eat grass and stroll around a bit. "

I'm afraid to are totally wrong in your whole assessment of a horses performance.

One only gets the best from a horse with reward and kindness and any act that it performs has to be tailored to it's natural capacity whether it be dressage, jumping or racing.

Horses are intelligent plains animals originally, creatures that have to have great inherant agility and speed. All one does in breeding a style of horse is focus upon developing such characteristics and in training to coax natural abilities to a particular end.

I realise that those who oppose any use of the horse for work or sport will remain unconvinced but would ask how much actual hands on experience have they in working with and caring for horses?

The huge amount of horses that die says it all, along with the attitude of some in the so called industry, eg that arsehole taking a pic sitting on a few horse.

There's also plenty places that rehouse greyhounds who are dumped because they don't make money.

It's ugly and people defending this shouldn't own pets

Well that’s a bit silly , so you happily support breeding of animals in poor conditions often with long term health issues as long as people don’t race them.

If your going in on the animal welfare debate can’t be half in half out.

. I am at work today but as I finish at 5.00 I will be straight over the betting shop to watch the Grand National as far as I am concerned it’s the race that stops the UK nation. I have had £5 each way on Delta Work and & £3 each way on Good Boy

Bobby enjoy your day mate.

"This could go on for ever, but same principle applies to athletes but we all watch sport

Im out of here as have better things to do

Athletes have a choice., Horses are forced

Plus if as many Humans died as horses each year there'd be an inquiry at least

Exactly! People just try to justify their backing cruelty! X"

Agreed x
