So I recently took on a PT and I'm really surprised at how much I can lift and also how much I enjoy it.

Any inspiring stories I can hear as to building your weights, figure and strength? I'm size 18 and wanted to look better for holiday of a lifetime in May X

Well done. I’ve recently joined the gym as I’ve lost 5.5 stone since last January and like you have a holiday to Vegas in July and wanna look good in my bikini eek. I can’t lift much yet but I’m getting there. Nic.x

Well done you. That's amazing. Vegas is fab but watch out for the creepy Chinese people thrusting escort numbers as you pass

I was so surprised and felt good. I've always been a cardio girl X

Well done to both of you! Weights is a great way for weigh my loss. Especially as you increase your metabolism for a time after so burn more calories for longer while with cardio it’s only while your doing it.

As to vegas I love it. I go every year. Well until covid ruined it but hopefully I’ll be back there soon.

Aw that's sweet of you to say. Yeah PT says same. I always felt intimidated in weights but I know people are really only there for themselves. X

Exactly. Please just ignore everyone there. I know a lot of people think people are looking at them or are bothered what they lift etc. if they are their option I’d not important as they are not training properly themselves.

Anyone I see in the gym regardless of size I just think good on them everyone starts somewhere and tge hardest thing to do is start.

Inspiration?

I started at the gym around 18 months ago after health warnings.

10stone loss and still going. Embrace the weights, they’ll do wonders for your weight, strength, bones, body shape, etc.

Discipline, commitment, consistency, be accountable. Great things can be achieved.

People I know in gyms are supportive of others and admire people doing something for their health.

Weight loss is generally more sustained when it's both dietary and exercise driven. Best too as a permanent lifestyle change, otherwise yoyo dieting happens or people get discouraged too easily.

Look into how to get sustained increases to your basal metabolic rate, such as from High Intensity Interval Training. Muscle does need more energy to be sustained than fat, so your weights work will do you good. You could calculate how many calories burned by extra muscle but don't assume that you will pile on many pounds of muscle very quickly.

Exactly that it’s very hard to add muscle mass. Also ignore scales instead use photos as if you are losing fat and gaining some muscle your weight may not change however by using photos you will be able to see the difference that scales will not show.

Thanks everyone X

Some real good advice. I do see tummy toning more and pt said same. Ignore scales.

I've just started hello fresh as I'm a terrible meal planner and that's become a hobby too . I like the hour I spend cooking X

I love weights. They are a great stress relief, as well as the other physical health benefits.

I play with the heavy stuff 4 times a week in PT, then cardio 3 times a week.

If I could just control what I put in my mouth, I'd be awesome!

I got to 250kilos for both legs and arms, then burst a muscle in my leg

I did find it great stress relief and oddly therapeutic.

Love reading stories like that. I got a PT for my weight loss (4 stone so far!) and love weight lifting. Got 110kg deadlift PB and it’s so empowering.

It’s shaped my legs and my bum and given me a waist!

You totally got this, enjoy it!

Playing with the heavy stuff is what I’m going to call training from now on

Congratulations, OP. I've definitely found lifting addictive, in a good way.

I was a steady gym goer for a while, but was too scared of the free weights section, but got into lifting properly about 4 years ago when I also started seeing a PT (wish I'd done that sooner now as it made such a difference!).

Love it, for all the reasons others have said: having a goal to work to, empowerment, a real sense of achievement. As well as all the health benefits.

Recently started with more Olympic lifting (snatch and clean & jerk) and really enjoying that too - not as easy to lift heavy, but really enjoying learning the new skills. Turns out you can teach an old dog some new tricks...
