Thats a word I see crop up so often in these sorts of discussion, 'toned' - from the way people use it, I'll assume they mean not particularly muscular, at least not HEAVING under the weight of them like some sort of living action figure, just fairly moderate and athletic in build, perhaps with a bit of smoothing fat all over, like they work out but not particularly hard, is that the 'toned' people keep referring to?

The modern perception of what constitutes 'muscular' has been badly skewed by advent of steroids in the 50s, and especially likes of Joe Weider and Arnold Schwartzenegger. If you take a look at the physiques of bodybuilders and strongmen prior to then, barring a few gifted specimens you'll see that many of them would only qualify as 'toned' by todays perception of what a strong, masculine physique is supposed to look like, as the general public have been exposed to so many steroid built physiques over the years that most of them are completely unaware that those sort of muscles are, for the VAST majority, unnattainable without the use of chemicals.

There is no such thing as toned that people go on about so much either.. What people call a toned body is basically a body with good muscle and low body fat, therefore making the muscle more defined...

Not necessarily so, many great body building champs were/are only short in stature.

Its considerably easier for a small guy to look impressive than a big guy.

A 5'4" guy with only a 44" chest and 18" upper arms would look pretty chunky, whereas a 6'4" guy with the same measurements wouldn't look as muscular.

The taller guy has to build a good deal more muscle for the same effect.

Depends on what you define as impressive, personally I've always thought that well muscled yet athletic looking physiques like Frank Zane were more impressive than thick, hulking ones like Ronnie Coleman. Both guys were gassed up to the eyeballs though so neither a natural trainee should aspire to.

To the OP, I wouldn't say so as I was at what I would call my physical peak at about 32, though that's down to my working hours and I'm still in good shape, however I still had no problem attracting fair ladies when younger, despite having a 16 year olds whippet-thin under 10 stone body at about 24, lol!

I think there's many ways a guy can be attractive

actually that's not quite correct , the definition of a toned body is exactly as above an amount of muscle and reduction in fat that allows the definition of the muscle shape to shine through .

what is often said however is the idea of toning is misunderstood and needs to be explicitly broken down to the fundamental fact fat needs to be burned , this is often within the context of a larger man /woman who ask to be toned and spend ages doing useless toning exercise when large compound moves and interval training would give the right effect

where toning is really misused is the belief that one can tone a specific area when it is the overall reduction in body fat that is required .

It's a sign of the times that we associate defined muscles with sporty people or gym addicts, but that's mainly down to the way our working lives have changed over the last 20-30 yrs.

My Grandad was a blacksmith who never went inside a gym once he left the army, but his party piece was to "play the drums" with 2 x 28lb hammers on his anvil. He had amazing arms and upper torso.

You rarely saw fat builders when they traditionally stripped to the waist as soon as the sun came out.

Moms were usually quite lithe until they aquired the modern labour saving devices.

I've always said that practical physical labour trumps weights and machines when it comes to both developing real world strength, hence why I included a log pressing pic on my profile - strangely though, its never garnered the same sort of attention on here as simply getting my cock out!

If you've got no muscle structure or muscle bulk, then you've got nothing to tone.

Build muscle, lose the fat, then you're on the way to getting toned.

Yes, build muscle and lose fat. If you just do one without the other you will not get the toned look people refer to.

Unfortunately its not the easiest thing in the world to do, the easiest mistake is to do one too much and the other not enough.

I don't recall ever seeing any bunnies down the gym, though there are plenty of juice heads making noises like rutting wilderbeasts as they furiously heave and clang the weights around.

Everyones got a 6 pack its just covered by a layer of fat..try HIT cardio for 20 -30 mins 3 times a week 3 mins normal pace 1 min sprint. Work out your weight, then work out what your daily maintenance calories are for your weight, eat a little under that amount of calories.Eat high protein and as clean as possible no processed crap with lots of sugar or saturated fat.

Loads of exercises you can do planks, leg raises, sit ups, just google a few.

The hardest workout i ever had was putting twelve bricks in a hod and running them up a ladder all day...six days a week...i have seen many gym junkies try this and fail to even get to the top of the ladder..the gym will give you muscle, but it won't give you stamina.

Its referred to as 'the law of specificity' - basically, you have to train for what you want to get better at, carrying brick hods won't make you better at curling big weights and vice versa.

"Wow..

Some great responce from this thread.

Juding by most I need to put a little work into my body.

your body looks very nice to me young man. "

Why thank you.

And that brick sound very much hard work. I'm thinking about getting into mountain biking as the chase is only a ten min drive from where I live.

Of course the gym will give up stamina, depends what your goals are when training...

Lots of young lads train for looks to get the girls, having good muscle mass doesn't mean your strong.

I now employ ten brickies and two hod carriers..the two hods are amateur boxers and their trainer has told me their job will give them more fitness than any gym work and circuit training.

I don't like the look and feel of sacks of potatoes, however, I do like a nicely toned body with a well-defined six-pack and Apollo's Belt.

However, it takes more than just a good looking body to make me want to meet and play with a gent.

"gym bunnies

I don't recall ever seeing any bunnies down the gym, though there are plenty of juice heads making noises like rutting wilderbeasts as they furiously heave and clang the weights around."

Pretty much my gym too. Plus they all have identical tribal tattoos!

I love the look of well defined, athletic men but I tend to avoid them as I don't see why someone who works hard on their physique would want to meet someone who is a doughball.

A great body isn't a prerequisite for me to want to play with someone, nor would it be enough, by itself, to make me want to play.

Joking apart, this is quite a common concept and sometimes the reason women say they don't like muscular guys.

Another example is T.V's Take Me Out.

An obviously gym fit guy will come out in a T-shirt to a chorus of OOOOH's and AAAAAH's but the minute he says he frequents the gym or is a fitness instructor the majority of lights go out.

It seems many women are intimidated by the thought that the guy may want to rope them into his gym life style.

I think if you took 1000 women and lined up 3 men, a fatty,a skinny little bloke or a fit bloke with a fit muscular body i bet most would choose the fit bloke..based on looks alone btw and not personality and all that garbage, remembering this is swinging and 1st attraction is looks ...

I wouldn't mind a guy wanting me to train with him sometimes. I actually enjoy martial arts, the gym (cardiovascular and resistance) and swimming.

A decent fitness/workout routine doesn't have to give you bulging muscles. I'm 55 now and have been a regular in the gym for 30 odd years.

I'm not defined, I still carry an extra few pounds, but I'm quite physicaly strong for an old bloke.

The main benefits I enjoy is that my posture is good, and I think that if your posture is good, your clothes will hang better and look better.

I've been doing it so long now that I couldn't stop training, it's become a way of life.

so many misconceptions about what a person who goes to the gym can and can't do and their potential personality and preference for a type of lady ...

a person that understands how the body works and how to train can pretty much adapt their body to do anything they wish x including stamina with strength .

then oddly for some reason it is assumed that all these people with muscular bodies only go to gym and don't do other athletic activity .

it is true that some young boys go only to gym build big relatively useless muscles , but many after their teens with intelligence progress to understand the concept of fitness

I would always suggest that sex should be part of anyone's fitness x

as for personalities , those that go to the gym will mirror the wide spectrum of personality types and intelligences that none gym goers have

That would seem to be the case. I often come across guys profiles on here who I strongly suspect are using steroids, and are thusly carrying alot more muscle than myself, and yet they rarely have much in the way of verifications - whilst I most certainly do believe that its important to be strong and healthy, theres little point being ripped and muscular if you don't know how to actually TALK to women.

I think it's naive to assume anyone with more muscle than you is on steroids. I know some naturally very big guys. I also know people on steroids who you wouldn't think were taking them due to bitch tits and little muscle.

A lot of hard work has to go into building a body.

I'm just starting my journey and in as little as 3 weeks I've noticed a massive change. Okay, I'm female so it's different but I'm doing the same weight exercises as most men. I even use free weights instead of machines

You should watch the documentary Bigger,Faster, stronger , it's a good watch with a different take on steroids .

I've not been to gym for over 2 years, it's all about how you fuel your body , steroids arent a magic potion that you take an suddenly become muscular .

I admire people who go to the gym all the time , it takes a certain kind of person to set a goal an day in day out strive for that goal, eating 6 meals a day , pushing your body to its limit, that has I be admired but I'm still no a fan of gyms , I think there are better ways to achieve fitness (I didn't say size) .

Everyone has different likes and dislikes , I've been knocked back loads a times cause of the way I look and I accept that, along with the shear number of guys on here , I'm not to everyone's taste .

I have seen that documentary x

I have changed my opinion on steroids somewhat in recent months, but too many people taking them without putting in the hard work required.

I'm currently training to take part in Britains strongest woman and that's training 4 days a week eating a very clean diet of 6 meals a day. So far I've dropped 4kgs and 10 inches in 3 weeks. So a lot can be achieved with the correct nutrition etc. anyway, this is off topic lol.

I like muscles but not everyone does, do it depends who you want to attract lol

I've found that it depends on the woman but there are those who do like the look of muscles but would not want to get stuck into them for long.

Insecurities can run rife here.

I myself go to the gym 5 times a week because I enjoy it. whats 90-120 minutes out of my day doing something I enjoy and has a great benefit to it?

I am not a bodybuilder but I've told people what I do to stay in-shape and they always assume that.

if a woman doesn't like what I do then I dont really care, I do it for myself but so many guys do it for women.

I agree with naughty in that physical exercise is not necessarily done in gym... Seen some muscular African men and women in their 60's.... Pure hard work heavy lifting in 90 degree heat.... Yet they are not bulky... Just lean and muscular....

Also some have said a good discipline with training and diet is good too... At the end of the day it's people's personal preference on what kinda body they find attractive and how it moves and or feels when it comes to sex... Ebony

Wow there are some good comments, and some silly comments, I'm currently in fat reduction phase of my training, so in a month or so I'll start seeing some abs, and toned muscle, but normally due to my specific sport (amateur strongman) i normally carry a little excess body fat to help with the weights in competitions, and the fact i won't eat all day during a competition. I train for power, strength, and recovery, this makes me a rather big 20+ stone muscle bear naturally.

Steroids are like protein powder, a supplement used to aid your already prefect diet and training.

Steroids are ok if used properly and there are many body builders or gym rats that wouldn't have half as good a body they have without some help,no matter how good the diet or training is you'll only get to a certain level naturally...

The problem is to many youngters want the great body in 5 mins without putting in the effort.

Living a healthy lifestyle takes alot of dedication and more often than not the people that put down these guys or girls down are envious people that could never do it themselves ..

I too find this very strange, if your not fueling the body where does your energy come from ?

The 1st thing your body will do is to start eating an breaking down your muscle to feed itself if you don't ?!

This is why most strong men are big guys and not many chiseled dudes, the need to eat so many calories to train at that intensity .

I'd never do a race or major physical activity without fueling my body or eating between disciplines ?

Given he's quite successful and trains with some of the worlds strongest men he must be thing something right...

He has high calorie high sugar snacks between events but not a full meal until after the competition. Eating as normal would make him feel sluggish.

I'm quite aware of the fact that some guys are simply bigger built than others and are thusly capable of gaining a larger amount of muscle, however, I'm also aware of the fact that everyone has limits to just how much muscle they can gain, and when I see a physique with disproportionately large shoulders and traps, along with a bloated, water logged look to their muscles, then its clear to me that that person hasn't made those gains simply through hard training and sound nutrition.

That's an excellent point. I found during my first days at the gym I was stronger than most skinny guys my own size and put it down to the same kind of work.

Though the best workout is to combine both, after lifting for five or si years I'd be hefting chimeneas and garden sets up to 50kg onto the seven foot top shelves to save on space in the warehouse.

Though I did make more work for myself as there was only myself and one other lad who could pull the buggers down lol!

Realize you're interested in the opposite sexes perspective primarily - that aside..

Muscley men are plasticy in feel and uncomfortable during intimate contact.. nothing better than a little cushion to go with the pushn'(emphases on a little!) morbid obesity would be as unpleasant as a hard plasticy physique in a sexual partner presumably.

"Given he's quite successful and trains with some of the worlds strongest men he must be thing something right...

He has high calorie high sugar snacks between events but not a full meal until after the competition. Eating as normal would make him feel sluggish."

I'm sure he is successful , it was just the way he worded it , he said he "didn't eat all day" during a competition , that lead me to believe he was almost fasting on the day of a competition and I don't think it's possible to compete at that level and no fuel your body but if he's taking the energy snacks that's a whole different thing.

When I'm competing in my races, I'll have breakfast and nothing else till the race, maybe an energy gel during but that's dependent on the distance .

I used to train with Britains strongest man(for his catagory) and have nothing but respect for those boys , if Terry Hollands can stay injury free he may well win it one day but it's a sport where injury goes with the territory

As one who has just recently started an addiction with exercise, I find these responses very informative! Wishing you weren't all down south boo hoo.

As to the original question from OP. In the past I would have knocked back a ripped guy if he approached me through sheer self consciousness, but now as my body changes, I know I still have a long way to go, but I can hold my own stamina wise, and I am strong enough to give as good as I get.

So maybe very soon I will (for the first time ever) get my chance to run my fingers over toned, ripped, bronzed and oiled male muscles! And just pray to her upstairs that he has a cock to match! Lol xx

Yeah, like the other guy said I thought he meant zero food for the day during the competition.

Snacks are what I meant.

"The hardest workout i ever had was putting twelve bricks in a hod and running them up a ladder all day...six days a week...i have seen many gym junkies try this and fail to even get to the top of the ladder..the gym will give you muscle, but it won't give you stamina.

so many misconceptions about what a person who goes to the gym can and can't do and their potential personality and preference for a type of lady ...

a person that understands how the body works and how to train can pretty much adapt their body to do anything they wish x including stamina with strength .

then oddly for some reason it is assumed that all these people with muscular bodies only go to gym and don't do other athletic activity .

it is true that some young boys go only to gym build big relatively useless muscles , but many after their teens with intelligence progress to understand the concept of fitness

I would always suggest that sex should be part of anyone's fitness x

as for personalities , those that go to the gym will mirror the wide spectrum of personality types and intelligences that none gym goers have

"

Hit the nail on the head exactly. There seems to be so many preconceptions about people who work out. Not everyone muscular lifts only weights, wants their woman to work out or wants a skinny woman. Just like everyone else, they are also entitled to their preferences and I think it's a shame that a woman would not consider such a guy because of their own insecurity. If someone showed enough discipline and grit to look after themselves and the intelligence to understand their body and to improve their health, what's the issue?

I find it baffling why anyone would see that as a negative....

We reckon what scares many women, especially the ones on Take Me Out, is the fact that a guy who's an obvious gym user might want to take them to the gym with him.

That's what put's the fear of God into many of them.

We've personally known lots of body builders who's looks have attracted women, however when they have him in their clutches the first thing they want him to do is pack the gym in.

Rather than go with him, they live in fear of the type of women he may meet at the gym. Weird!

Too much dieting to get 'ripped', but a good degree of definition isn't especially hard to achieve with the right approach to calorie control and training.

I don't get that at all. I'd be happy to either train with him, (if he wanted me to) - it'd encourage me to get back to the gym - or trust him.

If the first thing I wanted a man to do was change his hobbies then he's not a good choice to be with IMO.

Actually, thinking about that last remark it is strength I like more than muscles per se I think. I really don't do skinny, but a strong, slim frame is fine my me, I don't need or even desire a heavily muscled look.

But that wide-shouldered naturally strong frame is a huge turnon. I like my horses like that too - haha!!
