Has anyone else noticed the growing trend of profile photos being massively edited with FaceApp or indeed other beauty filters.

It’s always been prevalent on the ‘hot photos’ lists with most high scorers having a bit face which is better suited to being on top of a plastic barbie doll but what surprises me is the fact so many club goers, legitimate meets etc now do it. It makes no sense to me, I don’t really get how anyone wants to present an image that in the flesh is then disappointing, a flawless face that is suddenly wrinkled and weathered, a guys six pack that turns into a one pack muffin top or a trans lady who’s jawbone doubles in size as her makeup filter falls off... for me I worry about the damage it does to folk, it seems very similar to the scenario we had in the 90’s where supermodels where airbrushed to hell, that only ever ldamaged mental health, increased body confidence issues and aided the popularity of eating disorders etc.

Has anyone else experienced this? What are your views? Maybe you do it... If so, why?

I've seen it quite a bit on here but you can tell they are filtered just by looking at them. I don't really see the point because if you do meet someone and you're nothing like your pictures then you're just leading to disappointment from the start. It's no different from people using face pics from years ago.

My profile pic is clearly filtered. The rest are not. I've always worried any potential meets would feel I catfished them if we met and I'd used filtered pics.

Yup it’s common place. There’s plenty of ‘photo forensics’ apps that can show up ‘generated’ or ‘distorted’ pixel areas... as others have said, generally the photos are so obviously doctored it doesn’t need it but often these reveal the OMG stunning pics to also be faked.

It’s across the board too... females face and body altering, guys adding muscle tone, increasing penis size, trans using feminising filters, body sculpting and digital makeup etc.

I used to be on a few dating sites and it used to infuriate me with all the filters. I was so looking forward to a date once with a lady . When we met she didn't have dog ears or a puppy nose. I was catfished

. Joking aside it's very popular. I've seen it on social media. When you know the person in real life and think omg you look nothing like your pics.

I totally agree, its absolutely obvious when a filter is used, and they look stupid. I refuse to meet anyone who provides filtered photos, i dont know what I'll end up with. Its daft stuff for kids on other social media sites, grow up & be honest about what you look like. It smacks of attention seeking needy insecure individuals to me

Many people here have no intention of ever meeting, so posting flattering edited pictures that prompt positive messages from others can boost their self-confidence, even if only fleetingly.

I think to a degree that’s ok on the surface...

You then look at it in a wider, society context and there’s an argument it does plenty of harm. The rise in body image issues, the use of plastic/cosmetic surgery, in particular there’s a huge rise in male eating disorders and teen suicides which are all associated with unachievable perceptions of beauty or the required standard.

I guess on a basic level with fab... nobody wants to get catfished or waste their time on a person who’s not being honest.

Totally, it just adds to that individuals insecurity... it also forces them to remain isolated for fear of the lie being exposed. It’s a massive issue for the trans community where bedroom divas end up reliant on online approval yet make zero inroads into forming meaningful friendships/relationships or indeed living their life integrated into society. Fast fwd a decade and those people are really damaged.

If it makes someone happy then I'm not particularly bothered other than a slight sadness that so many people feel so insecure about their face or body.

If I get on well enough with someone to arrange a social then it's highly unlikely that a less chiseled body or a saggier jawline is going to hugely alter my feelings towards them.

I don't find it undermines my trust in the way that an explicit lie about age would (just using that as an example as I have met someone who was very clearly decades older than his profile age and was using old photos to conceal that).

If I'm meeting a guy who is 55 I expect a 55 year old's face and body, even if that's not what the flattering photos show. Whether that flattery is done by clever angles and lighting or by a filter doesn't make much difference to me.

I don't see the point. If someone meets you based on a pic of you that's been altered you'd surely just come across as disingeuous at best?

I prefer the 'What you see is what you get' way of doing things.

There are a few people I have met who I know have filtered their pics to make them look better, making their face look thinner, their faces look flawless or their weight but they really don't have to because they are beautiful on the outside as much as they are on the inside x

I think that’s a fair comment.

Where I struggle is I find confidence and personality quite a driver for sexiness... both are under minded quite a bit by a scenario where they present a different reality online.

Till this moment I don't understand filters ( the funny ones are something else ) but in my opinion it is society pressure and peer pressure that the one must look flawless to be accepted by others, which is very wrong because we are all beautiful as we are x

I think most of us want to present our best self on line and off line in circumstances where it's preferable that people like us in some ways. However I think it depends why you're doing it. Much like me taking a cake to work that my talented baker friend has baked and passing it off as my own. The praise feels lovely at the time but is ultimately worthless in any meaningful way

I’m not searching for advice, I just find it a really interesting subject and wonder about others views... ultimately 40 years ago in this country there was a massive backlash against such behaviour due to the damage it was doing to young females at the time. I just find it amazing after making such progress it’s come back but now affects all sexes and a far more widespread due to social media, the web etc.

My fab equations always been simple... it’s naughty Facebook to keep in touch with those met in clubs, parties etc. So for me it’s not really an issue for ‘selection’ but I imagine for many who use the platform to find meets it could be.

I look a hugely different with makeup on (more different than any filter I’d use)

It’s socially accepted and if we are honest, expected they ladies will wear makeup to a meet.

What about padded bras, pull in underwear, lash and hair extensions etc we all change our appearance for the better, filters are in the same category in a way.

There’s a big difference... you can’t wear a photo app out at night. Everyone can dress up smart, preen etc... you can’t leave 2 stone on the sideboard or change your head before going out though.

Ones working with what you’ve got, the other is just making yourself into something you aren’t.

Totally get that, it's just human of us all. We don't put bad photos of us on (we think) but we try to put a good range of photos on that are genuine and represent our actual features. I think to do otherwise would just be a waste of everyone's time. We're not huges fans of the online world anyway when it comes to funding people, much prefer real face to face interaction. That's why clubs are awesome.

It's all false advertising... but at least make up your turning up looking like your pics and not looking completely different to a point you cannot replicate your online look

I use colour filters on my pics...just because I think my best looks are black and white and yes maybe black and white hides a few extra wrinkles, but if im chatting to someone and its going somewhere then we chat on WhatsApp so I can send an instant pic if wanted and always a social meet first anyway

We have used the occasional filter for fun purposes or in the case of our public viewable videos that show our faces we have used the cartooned type filter which effectively masks our identity (true versions in friends gallery)

We don’t use them to mislead, rather to have a bit of fun with - as said our friends only gallery is full of our true weathered selves

The point I was trying to make is that if I use a filter V makeup, I will look more like myself in the filtered version yet it’s acceptable that I turn up with a full face if makeup, lashes, hair extensions etc. which changed my appearance much more than any filter I’d use.

I disagree with the filter comment though, having looked at FaceApp, airbrush etc... the levels people change shape, skin smoothness etc is laughable. Makeup doesn’t alter bone structure and body mass etc, it brings definition to what we have, it’s an art or display of our individual skill... it has legitimacy, digital editing and reshaping doesn’t.

That’s true, I’ve never used a filter to reshape etc hence why it only makes me look a bit more airbrushed and not massively different. I can be unrecognisable with makeup and lashes

Thankyou, it’s been expensive but I do love the plastic look (it’s not for everyone)
