On first contact or reading a profile does poor spelling, punctuation, grammar and the use of text speak have an effect on future correspondence?

I am asking for a friend who works for the grammar police.

I’m also someone who has stopped talking to people whose messages were just too full of text speak or awful grammar (some of whom were on my hotlist).

In fairness yes it does put us off. You have to make room for autocorrect but yes, poor grammar is a turn off.

This won’t go down well, but poor grammar gives us the perception (may be incorrect) of poor intellect, which in turn means a lower social class of person.

Will most likely get a lot of hate for that but it’s our perception.

In fairness though. It’s not an incorrectly placed comma or apostrophes. More really bad spelling.

Not everyone on this site is English speaking. If I can read and understand what you've written then I can chat to you . I don't understand a lot about text speak or whatever its called but when someone write to me in normal English then I don't tend to look at grammar and punctuation. I'm not an English teacher lol. And I'm sure I've made mistakes just writing this .

To use proper grammar is the ideal. It would be great if everyone was able to use it. On the other hand, context is an important factor. Are we writing a story? A report? A letter? Are we texting on our phone? Is English our second language? Whom am I communicating with? A friend or my supervisor?

It would be great if everyone used proper grammar, but the meaning of the communication is what matters. Not all of us are competent writers, but we can get better if we practice our writing skills.

Our education system is set up to conflate intelligence with literacy.

This is a dangerously false equivalence.

There are very literate people who are very, very stupid – me, for example.

There are also less-literate people who are very, very intelligent. Remember – the person writing might have dyslexia, or be corresponding in their nineteenth language. They could have, through no fault of their own, been sent to a poor school, or be born to parents who just didn't care for reading.

So yes, while I understand the impulse to judge someone on their writing – I do it myself, every day, and constantly struggle against it – remember that the words you see on the screen are never the whole story.

Here comes a disclaimer, though, which I fear may undermine everything I've just said above: "Good" writing conveys the most meaning. The reader can extract more from a piece of text when they can be sure that any "deviances" are deliberate stylistic choices rather than errors. Conversely, "bad" writing obscures meaning, to the point where I've seen posts on here that I can't actually understand. So, while I'd be reluctant to dismiss "bad" writing as "lazy", I would also fear that I'd struggle to communicate through the written medium with that person, because of the subtleties that would be lost in the noise of all the errors.

It’s not just the grammar, it’s also the content and how someone conducts themselves.

We all have our likes and dislikes. For me a mentally stimulating connection with the person I play with is very important.

I can’t get to know someone through streams of random letters and if that’s how they write they probably converse in a similar way. It’s not going to work for me unfortunately.

I’m not perfect in the aspect myself but I try my best to be clear and articulate where possible.

It does put me off. I do try to ignore it as I know people can have dyslexia or English as a second language, but for me bad spelling and grammar interrupt the flow of a conversation. I'm not perfect myself and am prone to typos.

I am dyislexic and yes, I misspell words that I may not notice. However, I cannot read text talk or anything that is not proper English, its just too difficult sometimes to decipher. The example given previously just sums it up, and as some have said, it is laziness and often an indication of the level of enthusiasm from the writer.

If I ask politely, either they will make an effort or be abusive, that to me speaks volumes of what the person is looking for.

You can write the most impeccable english in the world and be able to spell every word known to man without any mistakes, but that counts fir nothing if you're an ass hole. Personality, good manners and kindness are more attractive than bloody grammar,spelling and punctuation.

I can be a total grammar nerd, and do notice mistakes in profiles, but I also understand that not everybody can write with perfect spelling and grammar (I'm now praying that this message is free of spelling and grammar errors!). It's not something that I'd hold against another person. Besides, in some cases English may not be their first language. Despite being able to write fairly "correctly", I nevertheless suffer from an overuse of emojis, though I don't really do text speak. It's probably a generational thing and I don't think there's much of a saving in time using text speak. So, to cut a long story, sideways, I don't hold spelling and grammar against someone. I don't think it's a fair thing to do. I haven't come across anyone on here that uses text speak so heavily that it's turned a chat session into an acronym decoding session.

It doesn’t bother us at all, as someone who struggles massively messaging due to my dyslexia, we understand not everyone’s perfect! I’m sure we’ll have been dismissed many times for my terrible writing, but to be honest I wouldn’t want to meet someone who judged on that. Oh and just for the record, I have two degrees and put every effort into the bedroom, just saying

I’m a fully fledged member of the grammar police. I will quite happily double text if I make a mistake in a message. Everybody has something that is particularly important to them, grammar is mine.

"its", I believe. Correct grammar avoids ambiguity, e.g. "Have you eaten grandma?", versus "Have you eaten, grandma?"
