There were dedicated magazines Desire was one. There were also ads in the back of certain publications which gave a box number. People would send a letter and sometimes a polaroid. I used to work for such a publication and all the letters came into the office for distribution.

Anyone remember exclusive, journal of love and new direction? Hybrid contact magazine crossed with Readers wives. The owners of those magazines retired early mostly because of me!

Hull

There was a Swingers Contact Page via P O Box numbers, in the Daily Sport paper. It was through that, I got my first meet around 1998.

However, prior to then, in 1990, my introduction was via my then fiancee who was involved with a swinging group on the South Coast.

Then, the "scene" was very much Underground! You had to know someone, who knew someone who knew someone else about 10 steps up the line! Even with her as a longer term member and knowing me intimately, I still had to go through a Vetting Meeting of about 15 minutes to determine I was the right type of person to join!!

I did pass that stage, and wow, I went to some superb meets.

1970s you used contact mags , sending letters with poloroids in a second envelope to po boxes then sat back awaiting replies, which could take up to 2 weeks . or no reply at all if they were poloroid collectors , if successful there was then letters backward and forward or phone calls on land lines , and eventually a meet . You tended to be less picky then as it took so long to arrange meets . Was all pubic hair and bareback in those days . The other way was to be risky and speak direct to people you knew or were casual meets . It was more of a adventure then but much prefer todays methods of meets but it does lead to more no shows or false users

Was it easier for men back then?

was somewhat easier for men back in the 70s as fewer people involved in swinging and no were near as many single men so as i said due to the time it took to arrange meets if a guy was half decent looking or endowed he would more than likely get meets on a regular basis

"Question for any of our long time swingers... How did it all get organised before the days of fab?"

Going through the small ads, writing a letter to a PO Box, giving your real address away on an enclosed stamped envelope, adding a facial pic and then waiting.

Usual turn around for a replay was about 7-10 days. More than two weeks and you took it as not interested.

Strangely, back in those days given there was clearly less time wasters as you had to give up your address up front, there may have been less people on the scene but you were more likely to get a positive reply.

Then, if they liked the sound/look of you they’d give you a phone number to call (landline obviously) and usually some instructions on good times of day/week to call when they could chat with a view to a meet. I often received instructions on code words should anyone else answer or be in the house, so nobody was compromised!!!
