Anyone use What3Words app for outdoor meets?

I have not yet but tested it out and works brilliantly for sharing s location and navigation to a location.

Ive heard of it but never used it. Isnt it just the same as giving out a postcode or just your address? Or just telling them where you are?

We would do, but when we tried 18 months ago for an outdoor meet most who replied didn't have a clue about it and it took to much explaining.

See it is now advertised, so maybe more people use it now.

Has lots of potential for outdoor meets.

My experiences with W3W have been good. My holiday home is rather difficult to find even with a post code. I get better service from couriers when using W3W.

As someone who works in IT/Technology I have to say W3W is one of best things to come out recently. It's very accurate.

The current news article has to be taken with a pinch of salt because the anomalies were down to speech recognition, accents or similar words within a few square miles.

Of course there's always room for improvement for anything.

I have used it for outdoor meet I was off path in a wood and was found. The accuracy is supposed to be 3 meters but if that's not true it's definitely close enough to meet up with someone.

I know the emergency services use it now as 3 words easier than map reference for most people. I will definitely be using it again

Sort of but much more accurate.

I once found where my mates were sat on a busy beach with it.

It came in very handy when phoning for an ambulance at the side of a road where I couldn't tell them exactly where I was. They sent me the link and after realising my GPS needed to be turned on they knew exactly where to arrive.

(ambulance for someone else, not me)

I can see how it would be very handy for those using it for outdoor meets as well.

Absolutely. I think it’s biggest issue re rescue services etc it that it doesn’t cope with the ‘vertical’ so you could be on top of a cliff and they arrive by sea at the foot for example. (Overhangs and caves similarly)

No you just run the app and it gives you three words that identify your current location such as

Monkey apple sea

The other person puts those in to their app and it will get them to you so no news to give out addresses or postcodes

I used to work as a 999 call taker and we were told to encourage people to use it. Wasn't always straight forward, but it worked well most of the time.

It might have negative effects on outdoor play though ... if people want to call the police to behaviour they finding offensive, now they can tell the police exactly where it's happening
