We used to have fun shopping in Soho when on an awaynight and going back to the hotel to try out our purchases. A lot more expensive than buying online though, but fun

I used to love the late night walk through the seedy bit of soho, odd visit with a friend to one of the cinemas after a few drinks..

Shame its all being cleaned up by the Puritans in the search of capital..

Sign of the times. Used to be seedy, then became a tourist attraction for being seedy. Then as sex toys and porn moved online, there's less man-in-a-mac customers buying stuff, more tourists seeing overly expensive sex toys and porn mags they can get online and the shops are no longer viable. Economics of it fails and it pretty much cleans itself up.

If Soho had the financial structure of Amsterdam, it would have kept going. UK is just to prudish for it and no money to indulge in it.

The main issue is that Paul Raymond owned a large chunk of the property.

After he died his daughter wanted to distance herself from the family 'name' so bagan selling it off to the highest bidder.

Add that to the local council trying to gentrify the area as fast as possible and it was a perfect storm.

NW London

There's a couple left around Walkers Court (bottom of Berwick Street in Soho) and Charing Cross Road on the corner of Tottenham Court Road but for the most part Soho has been very much cleaned up. Both for better and for worse.

Like much of London now rising rents have pushed the more interesting shops into different parts of the city
