To be honest it's hard to say because a lot of them are so bone they don't even register. 'Can I ask you a question' being a common recurring example. Sometimes you see the first-line and instantly think, next. Don't want to sound out of order but the first line in you inbox notification can just be an instant turn off. I don't think anyone wants to waste their time when they know its an instant turn off and nobody owes anybody their time in reply. It's always disappointing when you don't get a reply but we just have to be adults and take it on the chin. We can't expect to be everyone's cup of tea or expect time and effort from them in response to an unsolicited message (especially when it lacks anything you can go off).

Its more than likely because people don't know how/have no options on how to greet someone on a platform that seems to insist people don't

* say hello?

*ask them how they are?

*ask them if their day is going okay?

*ask them how they are finding fab?

Frankly it doesn't give anyone much scope for starting a proper conversation.. So it's likely ' can I ask you a question?' is the best you are going to get..
