Scammers are calling people and using the names of two companies everyone knows, Apple and Amazon, to rip people off. Here’s what you need to know about these calls.

In one version of the scam, you get a call and a recorded message that says it’s Amazon. The message says there’s something wrong with your account. It could be a suspicious purchase, a lost package, or an order they can’t fulfill.

In another twist on the scam, you get a recorded message that says there’s been suspicious activity in your Apple iCloud account. In fact, they say your account may have been breached.

In both scenarios, the scammers say you can conveniently press 1 to speak with someone (how nice of them!). Or they give you a phone number to call. Don’t do either. It’s a scam. They’re trying to steal your personal information, like your account password or your credit card number.

If you get an unexpected call or message about a problem with any of your accounts, hang up.

Do not call a phone number they gave you

Do not give out your personal information

If you think there may actually be a problem with one of your accounts, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real.

Had the royal mail one on 2 seperate phones via sms regarding a missing parcel. Obviously I know it was fake as royal mail firstly wouldn't know my phone number but I bet people fall for it. The strange thing was the website on the text message looked like the legit royal mail site on the link but it directed you to a totally different website. It was quite a low amount like 3.60.

Also out of interest I did a whois trace on the website it was directing to and obviously it was based in India. Home of the scammers lately it seems.

I (Mr) had the guy from Microsoft phone up while I was at my mums. Tell her PC was broken and they needed to do some things with it remotely. She knew it was a scam but handed the phone to her son who is better with computers. So I helped them, pretending to be a complete dummy. The guy was getting increasingly frustrated 5 mins in that I couldn't find the things on the screen that he wanted me to click on. I mean I was telling him I couldn't find the icons and buttons he was on about. Truth be told I wasn't even on my mums pc, that was in the other room and turned off. I was just sat in the living room. Then he said its not an apple is it? I said no, just a PC. So after another 5-10 more minutes of frustration saying I can't find the things he wanted me to do I said it doesn't matter that it says Linux Mint does it. He said so you have Linux? I the background says Linux Mint. He said ah, that's why, no problem I can still fix it. I said is Microsoft and Linux the same thing? He said yes we fix it all. I said I don't think so and put the phone down. Obviously I had lots of time on my hands and my mum in reality have a windows PC like most normal people. Still kept me amused for 20 mins or so.

I've also had the Microsoft one before. I kept him on the phone for a good 10 minutes pretending to find icons and saying I've clicked on them. I even later went on to say that I was also a police officer off duty and then he frantically hung up lol.
