"I’m sure Facebook users ur phone mic " Me too. I was chatting to my wife about a particular handbag supplier, then adverts from that company appeared on my fb feed out of the blue. I did some research and facebook say they don't use the mic to listen in on conversations, but I definitely hadn't been to their site or googled handbags up to that point. It's happened on a few things now and it wouldn't surprise me at all if this comes out as some sort of privacy scandal at some point in the future.

"I have my Facebook privacy settings on pretty strict and I haven't given it permission to upload or sync my contacts, yet it is still suggesting friends that I don't want to be able to contact me via Facebook, (or see my profile) and I really can't work out how or how to stop that because I can only also presume these people are getting the same suggestions about adding me. A high proportion of the suggestions are not numbers I even have in my my contacts on my phone. I'm finding it somewhat frustrating and a little bit worrying as my privacy is important. Does anybody know how to change this so that I'm not suggested as a friend to other people unless I literally ask them to add me?" It’s algorithmic. Facebook doesn’t need to gave your contacts to know that you know someone. They can guess through common friends, interests, locations you’ve been, groups you’ve joined, your bio, things you’ve been tagged in etc. and through that they’ll guess who you’re likely to know and vice versa. It’s annoying but I think the only way to stop it is to leave Facebook

"I haven't put my number into Facebook, and I use an email that's not used for anything else. I don't make myself interested in events or etc. Some of the friends requests are people I know that in person I have never had contact with online. It's really very freaky." Remember though a huge proportion of the Web has tracking inserts for Facebook on them, any site with any sort of share or comment functionality will be going to Facebook, and some use what's called a Facebook pixle, on a pc press f12 on your favorite site, and check in the traffic logs how many calls grt sent to Facebook, you will be shocked. I've got a dns server at home that blocks most of them (pi-hole) but that's not something everyone can setup. There is opendns and others that have a privacy focused setting section where some of it can be blocked if your willing to change your router/phones dns over etc. But honestly you don't ever have to go anywhere near Facebook.com to be tracked over the entire Internet

"WhatsApp have updated there rules.. we now use signal which is not connected to FB if you search the new WhatsApp rules it’s a bit worrying.." Only outside of Europe/UK the new stuff they introduced doesn't technically affect Europe much, there's still some, but gdpr and the likes neutered it before it was introduced. Still scary the amount of stuff they do track though, and have been doing for years since they bought them!

"Go into settings and turn off... off line tracking and adverts . Not easy to find because they hide them well. Try youtube Facebook settings some good videos on there. You can take full control but they don't like it so hide it. " That is off. I don't put anything on there that I don't mind being your out there forever, but I really am surprised how little privacy there is and how easily tracked it appears we are

"I have all the permissions set to not allow anything, my location, information, sharing etc, and yet the situation continues. It's really quite interesting" Do you have the Facebook app?

"Dont facebook also own FAB too? What makes you think that? Don't think it was a serious comment!" My bad; i just (wrongly) assume that everything is either owned these days by Facebook, Google or Sydney Uni
