My other half is ex Army. He did a 2 year stint at an airborne regiment or unit or whatever.

He always spoke very highly of how much the RAF used to fuck them around whenever they went down to Brize Norton.

Although to be fair he also said the RAF really seemed to look after their people. Better conditions and stuff like that.

Contrast to the Army literally making him live in a ditch that he’d dug himself lol.

I've got more medals than I have balls... Quite a lot more.

To be fare it's not that hard to do; the Queen's Jubilee Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct and one operations medal and you're on three already, plus there's another Queen's Jubilee Medal coming out this year... Most of my friends who joined after me have at least 8.

Counting medals can be really misleading. Although most ops are 6 months, the qualifying period for a medal is a month; therefore 6 medals could represent half a year or three years on operations.

Also, a friend with the same Bosnia medal as mine, spent all his time at the port in Croatia, I spent six months in a shot up factory (which continued to get shot up whilst I was in it) in Bosnia. Another friend got his Iraq medal for 4 months working at a base in Ryhad and returning to a hotel complete with swimming pool each night - my tour of Iraq was very different.

Don't go soft - it ruins a damn good banter... I had a come back lined up there that will seem mean now...

F@ck it you shoulda tried harder at school

For the record we got shot at in Ploce and the time we had to play poo sticks with real poos floating through our flooded tents wasnt exactly Ritz level accommodation. I think the two hour flight into Sarajevo to replace an engine was the most scary experience of my life.

We were treated to a one way fire fight by the yanks opening up on some unfortunates seen traversing the minefield on our first night in Bagram.

For me it was more about keeping my work and private life very separate. People talk. Jealousy/regret is a thing. I wouldn't want to be the cause of a break up (which I've seen happen) or it to affect my career negatively. I've seen guys get 24 hr postings for stuff like that. No bueno.

Always will be RAF Lyneham to anyone who served there, especially as most of the civil servants working there are ex-RAF!

Did 15 for my sins, mostly on Hercs and a brief spell in deep strip at TPF Marham. Getting mortared in Basrah was "fun" - the locals only had the ATC tower to aim at and our ops were at the base of it. Then we moved to Al Udeid - much nicer

Cu*t crab air wouldn’t let me board after r&r on herrick. But to totally take the piss, they let a random gaggle of crabs in after the blocked me and some other kid lol.

I was late back obviously and ‘technically’ awol so I had a two month practical joke played on me which consisted of everyone from the company commander down, insisting I was to be summoned for ‘field’ court-martial. Obviously I almost wept from relief when my ‘date’ came and all was revealed. So it was an enyoyable end to 6 months of near continual fear and anxiety

"Ex raf here

And plenty of active players at raf benson
