How put off are you by bad spelling, grammar and punctuation in messages?

Eg. Using the wrong your or there?

Personally I am immediately turned off by this sort of thing, but maybe I'm just a judgmental bitch...

I agree with you. However, there are times when I make mistakes or don't check the message before I send it that it looks like I am one of those whom you make judgements about.

It will be interesting to see further responses.

I'm with you.

Though I don't mind the odd typo - we all do it. But no grammar & continual spelling errors? Total turn off.

(I don't mean signs of dyslexia here, before anyone pulls me up!) X

The odd auto correct mishap is fine..... however a complete inability to use proper grammar and punctuation is a total turn off..... as is ‘text speak’.

We are more than comfortable judging such messages and wouldn’t entertain a reply. If you can’t construct a coherent message we probably won’t get on socially and we don’t have the time to test the theory

Not too worried about things like "there" and "their" as that can often be a sign of dyslexia and many dyslexic people are very intelligent, just not great at spelling. (Grammar is a different skill!)

I dislike text speak intensely and that would be an instant turn off.

Some people are dyslexic, also English isn't the first language for some. A little bit of poor punctuation is ok, not text speak though.

Auto correct and predictive text are my main bugbear. I got annoyed today when every time I posted a message, it had changed "Tits" to "Tots", and when you are saying that you "like to play with and suck tits" and it gets changed, its bloody annoying.

Even though I proof read, errors still get through.

Some people unfortunately rush type what’s in their Brain. Spelling is forgivable - Grammar however can change the tone & pitch - I struggle with reading that

I myself struggle with spelling and grammar. I do not believe that this makes me a bad person or any less worthy of peoples attention and affection. Therefore when interacting with people via the written word I try to look past poor spelling and grammar and try to see the personality of the person and read between the lines. Not being great at spelling and grammar isnt the measure of a person

Disregarding people based on spelling and grammar unfairly targets immigrants, people with learning difficulties and people from lower socio economic backgrounds who may not have had the same access to education as yourself. It's a bit of a low blow honestly and says more about you than it does about them.

At the end of the day we're all here for the same thing, and it's not for someone to write us a sonnet.

As long as they type fully, fair enough. Most people get the wrong to/too etc. Auto correct is a lot of our enemies, and learning difficulties are wide and varied.

However it DOES set apart the people that write correctly, and they, I appreciate reading a little more grammatically

I am dyslexic and it takes me quite a while to type, check, double check and then triple check what I have written before posting. Even then I often cock it up and end up having to delete a post and start again.

It’s not that I’m not putting the effort in, it’s just the way my brain works.

I normally give them a few msgs before I decide how eloquent someone is, After all txting/msging is mostly shorthand these days and autocorrect and typos are commonplace. If its such a jar for you perhaps ask for an Informal phone call or voice note. Grammar has never been a turn on or turn off for me so maybe I should sit this one out lol

I can fall foul of mistyping due to fat thumbs, so I am more forgiving of spelling mistakes and an not hung up on poor grammar. However I am not a fan of text speak.

The main thing for me is can I understand what someone is trying to say or not. If I cannot understand what they are saying then I do lose interest.

I think all of those are important but i don't judge others as it could be because they are dyslexic or didn't have the same education as others.

Personally I'm dyslexic and find it very difficult and no amount of spell check etc helps. I find it sad that people would think less of me (and others) despite the effort made.

If someone decides they want to correct anything I've sent in a message or via a forum post?

Then I'm happy for them to do so. I've never grasped the concept of the English language (in terms of grammar, construct etc.).

I'm more maths orientated than language focused.

I happily get by, so if it corrects something I've never understood? Then it's good to still learn.

But I appreciate that it can be a challenge to some people.

I'm not going to judge someone because of a formal lack of sentence construction or odd typo / spelling mistake.

Jesus... Life's too short for that sort of thing.

--

Can I send someone a message and have a nice conversation on the back of it? That's important to me.

.

Text speak is a different matter:

One, I don't understand it.

Two, it just feels lazy and creates an initial feeling that I'm not going to connect with the person or people behind that profile.

But that's my opinion.

It's a forum, we all get judged, profiles get judged and sadly some decide to be 'Nasty' and pull people up over irrelevant things.

A fine line behind constructive and just outright 'dick' behaviour.

Jokes aside, as the OP, I am actually going to assess my attitude, especially in relation to dyslexia and people with English as a second language.

I think some interesting points have been brought up, and I don't want to let any of my internal prejudice go unchallenged.

I don't see why people are having a go at you?

It's a perfectly reasonable requirement on your part (and mine).

Communication is key to me. I need my brain engaged before I can even consider having sex. And let's be honest, while meets/clubs are banned, crafting a good opening message is paramount.

Conversely, if lack of grammar, spelling mistakes and use of text speak DOESN'T bother you, don't have a go. Just move on

Nope,no turning people away for it. Don't get me wrong I do like correct grammar and spelling but it's not the be all and end all.

Autocorrect is to blame as well,"lockdown" on my phone becomes lickdown every time, which can be applicable as well

Somebody's writing says some important stuff about them. The occasional typo is one thing, but if somebody can't write sentences that actually make sense then I can't see us having any real interest in them.

It does, text speak evolved when we were charged 25p per text with limited characters. However now it is free if someone cannot take a nanosecond to type a full word then their lives are way too busy for me....

Sadly spell checkers can only help so much, if a dyslexic person spells a word completely back to front and wrong, then some don’t see it as spelt wrong as it’s right to us! Haha and spell check will have completely lost what we’re trying to say, giving no options! It’s great to hear that you ignore and move on tho. Miss PC x

"How put off are you by bad spelling, grammar and punctuation in messages?

Eg. Using the wrong your or there?

Personally I am immediately turned off by this sort of thing, but maybe I'm just a judgmental bitch...

Sometimes it puts me off, depends on my mood really.

Wuu2 bb doesn't get my crusty minge wet.

HahHa wuu2? Come on someone enlighten me ....

'What you up to baby'

"Jokes aside, as the OP, I am actually going to assess my attitude, especially in relation to dyslexia and people with English as a second language.

I think some interesting points have been brought up, and I don't want to let any of my internal prejudice go unchallenged.do you need a commer just before and ? I'm unsure but I thought not ??? "

I'm no real expert, but is this the elusive Oxford comma, and thus ok?

Perhaps I’m missing something but aren’t most interactions on this site highly judgmental? It’s obviously not someone’s fault if they are dyslexic, etc but nor is it their ‘fault’ how old they are or, to a large degree, how they look but they’re certainly judged on that !

If you don’t exclude people because of their writing that’s your choice, but I’m sure you exclude on other factors which is also your choice.

"I find the idea off that poor spelling and grammar would make someone an incompatible sexual partner. No-one insists on screening someone for numeracy, which is just as much an invalid indicator!

And that is your right to think that way. We all have our own way of sifting through perspective sexual partners.

If everyone respects that, we'll all be happy. X"

Indeed it is my right to give my view. I just said I personally find it odd (not 'off' - autojumble at work!). I assume that autojumble also changed 'prospective' to 'perspective' in your reply? It's easy to make mistakes eh?!

It certainly is. And yes, we all make occasional mistakes - again, refer to my initial post. But thank you for pointing it out, I had indeed missed it.

Doesn't make me a "poor" speller though, so I stick by everything else I've said here. Enjoy the rest of your day

I couldn't care less. But I'm quite kind. I do think it's judgemental and a bit snobby. I always think to myself that maybe there is a reason. Not an English speaker, forgot to read through before posting, didn't have the opportunity for a good education, dyslexic or something. Text speak is different. Its only annoying if it's too much.

I can honestly say that no one has spelt me in to bed.

I'm dyslexic and I can read things and read them in the 'wrong way' or not as the op has inteneded.

Spell checkers don't help.

Text speak can be hard to communicate with, in the long run... other than that, spelling and grammar? Doesn't really concern me; I'm nobody's teacher

Somewhere in Co. Down

Bad grammar or spelling doesn't bother me too much as I've often posted without reading what I have written then see I've made mistakes in a post. Plus some people have difficulty with writing so I would never judge them on it.

Text speech I really don't like because that is done on purpose and basically I'm too old to be bothered to try and translate it a lot of the time.

I do find it quite funny when people come on here correcting people's grammar but making mistakes themselves.

For us the content of the message is more important than how it's written. Some people use phones and as someone with fat ones I know how easy it is to make a mistake. Respect goes beyond grammar and punctuation. The heat of the moment might make people more eager to reply and so forgo the niceties of grametical etiquette but as long as they don't get abusive or crass then we see no issue

"Not too worried about things like "there" and "their" as that can often be a sign of dyslexia and many dyslexic people are very intelligent, just not great at spelling. (Grammar is a different skill!)

I dislike text speak intensely and that would be an instant turn off."

Really well said, I know quite a few people that are dyslexic, most are very intelligent in their own way. To me intelligence is not measured by spelling or a degree.

Yes text speak infuriates me. Just my opinion.

When using the abbreviation "Eg." it requires two periods. "E.g.".
