Dartford and Bluewater have been the most horrific experiences ever. I used to live near the crossing. It was not uncommon for people to simply abandon their cars and collect it the following day.

"why would you all never come back to Essex?"

For us it’s not just Essex but pretty much the whole of the south east. We visit family & travel back & you can almost guarantee a nice drive until you get to about Reading. Then all the “I’m more important than you” undertaking, tailgating arseholes start arriving.

The whole corner is driven by a need to make money & as it’s so expensive to live there a need to make as much as possible sometimes leading to people constantly wanting something for nothing or the belief that they work hard so life automatically owes them something.

We lived there for over thirty years moving further & further out until we couldn’t go any further, lived in a village of roughly 1000 people & yet the drive to live “Rural” where there are few jobs meant traffic during the week started at 5am & by 6am you couldn’t count to ten before another vehicle came past. Then you’d get the same from 3-8pm then quiet.

Here our record stands at 23miles.

That’s the distance between us & Aberystwyth our main shopping area. A record? Because it’s how far we’ve driven without coming across another vehicle on our side of the road. That’s roads similar in size to the road from South Woodham to Burnham on Crouch. Imagine driving from Grays to Burnham on a weekday afternoon & not seeing a single other vehicle on your side of the road!

Our incomes took a relatively small hit but our quality of life & general well-being has increased many many times that.

"Northern girl here who moved to Essex 20 years ago, I do like it down here but southend as changed so much over my time living down here and not in a good way.. But then every where changes in one way or another. C"

One of my best friends has just moved in with her bf up in Leeds and another of my best friends is from Manchester. If I was able to relocate with a nice job I'd probably give it some thought. I do like Northerners far more than Southerners. Just the accent and tone is so much more friendlier. When I go to a shop down here the shop assistant invariably fails to make any make eye contact and let's out a groan as if to make me feel apologetic for inconveniencing her. This isn't always the case of course, but up North I found it to be hardly ever the case. Having lived in the same flat for ten years I don't know the names of any neighbours except one and stopped posting Xmas cards through their letterboxes 4-5 years ago as I never received any acknowledgement let alone a card in return. This is more of a North/South debate rather than a criticism pertinent to Essex. And I am generalising. There are probably many nice patches which I have never been to and conversely probably some utter shit holes up North. Despite those things, I do admire the sense of pride and identity people share with their area which doesn't seem to exist down here.

We do miss a couple of things though, our last house was a timber framed early 18thC farm workers cottage & backed directly on to acres of arable farmland.

We miss the house, the pub next door & walking through the fields. The combines would stop literally thirty feet from our back door & stop for a beer or other cold drink as the farmer & his sons were drinking buddies.

We miss the sun too! Moved from nigh on the driest park of the U.K. to probably one of the wettest but we do live up a mountain with views for literally tens of miles. Having the RAF fly level with your house on their way to the Mach loop is novel too

I’ve lived in Essex most my life. It has its ups and downs, v much like most counties in the south east/country even. There are nice people and c-nuts where ever you go...

Personally I think it’s got some great countryside and natural beauty. Beaches are a bit naff but I love the estuary views, apart from seeing Kent across the water ( just kidding, waaassup Kent massive?!) Culturally it can be a bit bland e.g. bars, clubs, night life. Not very edgy. I’ve always liked Southend as it’s always had a counter culture: Mods/Teddies, Punks, Emos. Good gig venues and local live music... praying that it’s all back soon!

I spent a year working in Chelmsford back in the day when Dukes was the place to go. My area was north Essex and I used to drive the back roads which had some gorgeous scenery. Probably all built up now. I later lived in Ipswich but would go out in Colchester and Chelmsford. I have had a few girlfriends from Essex and a few good friends.

The Essex ethos used to be work hard and play hard. Which got turned into a ridiculous stereotype.

What’s not to love about Essex? It’s the ‘California’ of Great Britain.

Expecting mid to high 80’s and unbroken sunshine again today. I’m just getting oiled up before heading down to the beach.

Taking my ‘shitty stick’ with me as I will need to beat back the hordes of gorgeous women that tend to pester when I’m simply trying to relax naked on the beach.

Born and bred in Essex, and tho it has some wonderful places it is fast becoming a huge London Borough. So many houses being thrown up every green space going, hugely overpriced and very little parking. As someone said in the thread above, driving is a nightmare because of the massive expansion.

Seriously considering moving!

Having been to Manchester often and having a good friend just move to Leeds, I would say that Northerners in general are more down to earth and approachable. Even the more colourful characters I've encountered including a guy who was just released from prison that day and randomly had a chat with me seemed friendly. Essex is a bit more beige or 'basic' if we want to use contemporary terminology. We can't even use the 80s stereotype to identify us these days. Having said that, I think regional identity is fast becoming a thing of the past as the world in general becomes more homogeneous. Globalisation? Anyway, am from sunny Romford
