Anyone had a lumpectomy.... ? whats the scaring like.. Does it depend on how much tissue they remove or where they take it from...

How does radiation affect the skin or the person. Any info here or PM appreciated.

lumpectomy didnt leave too big a scar and radio therapy is something that affects each individual differently and if your worried about the effects you should speak to your gp i had 16 sessions of chemo and 4 of radio therapy im now 4 yrs in the clear ! good luck and i hope all goes well for you

"Maybe no one has had one ?

That should have said......Maybe no one has had one or want to talk about it.

But, you have some answers now, your post was obviously just missed as when serious subjects like this come up they are not normally ignored.

A friend has found a great deal of information in various support forums and websites.

There is lots of information to be found, but of course each case has it's own specifics, and each patient has thier own variables.

Healing and reaction to any fursther treatment following the lumpectomy (if indeed it is needed at all) will be your own.

As much as the information you find on the internet can seem contradictory, have a good look around, and follow your own instincts when it comes to the treatment and follow-up YOU require.

Get support, find others who have had the same experiences - and good luck.

All the very best to you.

Perhaps I may be able to answer the questions although I havent had breast cancer I am an ex nurse so?

It depends on how much tissue that has to be taken to how big the incision is. You can ask the surgeon to try to hide the incision under your arm but it may not be possible. You can also ask to see a cosmetic surgeon afterwards if you need to but remember this is the NHS and they arent so concerned with how you look. You should talk to your consultant or nurse they will know approx how much will be taken and how you should look after the surgery. The scar itself will fade to a thin silver line in approx 9 to 12 months dependent on how well you heal.

With radiation again depending on what dosage will be used it can look like sunburn and heals very quickly and doesnt usually leave a mark.

I hope this has helped a little and good luck as the success for this type of surgery is great
