I know people on here ask for party games/ice breakers so maybe similar things exist but nothing wrong with going retro.

A bit of an awkward scenario though if you dont fancy the person behind the keys you've chosen.

I guess you can always just chat LOL

I also once asked if car key bowl parties ever existed and the best reply I got was "Yeah... its usually played by the same people who had to do the washing up as they forgot to take their wallet to the restaurant" LOL

Most people seem to think it came to the UK's attention via the 1997 film The Ice Storm and that's certainly where I first heard of it. But as to where the writer(s) of the movie got it from I'm not too sure.

The trick is to make a note of who arrives in what cars - then when rummaging in the bowl, feel for the logo on the keyfobs...

....though it can be difficult to tell the difference between some - Aston Martin and Bentley are similar, for example...

I don't think it ever was a thing in this country. In the USA maybe as people drive there more and always did.

Swingers in years gone past in the UK got a taxi or even (gasp!) walked.

Suppose that depends on how homely it is. You never know, I may just make myself at home?

It did use to happen, mainly in the US and a long time ago. Back then separate room swap was more common whereas now people just pile in together and there's no need for it

Think that was the whole point of such parties - avoided people pairing off with others who they might already know, etc...

....and embarrassing the last two people left in the room...

Interesting

But if a party was full of strangers could be a good ice breaker as long as its an ice breaker and not a commitment to play it may work

Then again maybe not

It went on a lot in the early 70's. There were usually only 4 or 5 couples.

A great start to the evening usually followed by the men moving round the room and going with a different person so it didn't matter if you paired up with your partner.

I've heard of a club singles party where the women were given a padlock each on arrival and the men were given a key from a bowl at random.

The object for the men was to go around the party, chatting to the women and seeing if your key fit their lock. A bit like speed dating with some old-school swinging

Obviously everyone involved was able to say no if a match was made.
