Token gesture vs broader experiences

Before we got into this scene, I've only ever had experiences with white women. Personally I'd like to expand my experiences to all sorts of different women, which most obviously implies exploring race.

At the same time though I've read profiles which to me feel very justified in saying they don't want to be anyone's token black woman etc.

What's the difference between a token gesture and deliberately pushing for a broader range of ethnicities? I'm sure there are good and bad / honest and cynical ways to think of this, so I'm curious on any views about what they are.

I suppose it's whether you'd look at words like "fetish"?

I think if you mention it then it looks bad. Although some people will automatically get the hump and assume it's a fetish no matter what you say.

Why specify anything. You want to try new things with new people.

I suppose there could be interesting parallels with those "NOT RACIST BUT NO ASHUNS" statements then. Just about keeping it part of a natural outlook rather than making it a "thing".
