There seems to be a formality in the way some people to be approached and the reason why people ask is because the process bears a stronger resemblance to applying for a job than getting to know someone.

In the "real world," you can smile across a room at someone, walk over, make a joke about bar and the people in it, introduce yourself and then see where the night takes you!
