"Do you sometimes build up a picture in your head of what other Forumites are like in person? How they act, how they think about things. Maybe judge them, etc. It's really interesting how we can do this, and also how wrong we can actually be from time to time. Just earlier, I read a thread about someone who I'd previously prejudged in a somewhat negative way. Bit I was wrong about her. It's interesting what ideas we glean from the way one expresses themselves on a forum and what profile we then build up as a result of the way in which we read situations. Have you ever met up with a Forumite in person? Did the person meet your expectations?" Yes, always ![]()

"On the forums I tend to not read profiles, just look at what is being said. Building the mental image of someone (or something) is natural - actually an essential - thing for humans to do to function (a process called assimilation and accomodation). We load meaning onto people and objects based on whatever info we have, then use it to maniplulate and interact with them - humans, pets, computers - we swear at, cajole and love them all. Problem is text and images are so loaded with info we bring with us that we tend to pick out what fits in with our existing world view to reduce mental impact, however wrong it might be. Imagine you see the person of your dreams, but they have the same name, interests and style of underwear of a bitter and hostile ex partner. Could you see past it?" No, go with your initial instincts... servers me very well ![]()

" Imagine you see the person of your dreams, but they have the same name, interests and style of underwear of a bitter and hostile ex partner. Could you see past it?" Nope, I steer clear of anyone with so much as the same name as an ex

"I've met one one two people who have been very different to the mental picture I had of them. Others were exactly the same. Some of it is the facade we project (some being closer to the real person than others), some of it is the way I have filtered information. It's always interesting to me how my perception of self and of others can sometimes differ from reality." Yeah!!! It's interesting...

"I’ve learnt from meeting people over time. Work and socially. My image of what they will be like is usually way out. " Interesting that it's way out. Some people act!
