I left school just before my 15th birthday and in my job only required a very basic level of grammar and spelling (did need arithmetic though)although I was good at both it was a long time ago and I know I am nowhere near as good at either now as I was then due to lack of use.

May have to go back to college though if we rquire A level English before anyone will meet us

I must admit that I don’t find a poorly spelt message very enticing but I am learning to look past this as I do feel it is unfair. However, what I don’t like are those who choose to comment on someone’s spelling when their own syntax is always poor.

Not wanting to generalise as some people have very legitimate and valid reasons for poor spelling and grammar..but apart from not bothering to use a spell checker and the awful childish looking 'txt spk' making the writer look lazy, it can also give the reader the impression that the writer may be slightly lacking a bit of 'mental capacity' too..

Poor spelling along with bad handwriting can be an indicator of low intelligence...

Ok before the usual suspects start throwing their toys out of the pram, have a look at peoples handwriting, you will see a pattern..compare the handwriting of kids in public schools to that of the ones from dysfunctional families..how many (for want of a better word) so called 'thick' kids when you were at school and wonderful flowing handwriting and excellent grammar..most, sadly, couldnt even hold a pen properly..

Yeh there is probably a few of the educated privileged whos hand writing is terrible..but good grammar will make up for this...

But the trend is, the lower end of the educational scale you are..the worse your handwriting will be...(although this barely ever applies to girls for some strange reason)

So people who are put off by bad spelling may have an unconscious valid reason for it..(rightly or wrongly)

(and yeh yeh im sure we all know bright kids who cant write and less able kids who can)

We wouldnt say we are put off by bad spelling but in a lot of cases you can tell by the way something is written whether someone really does have a problem or if it is just the result of a dysfunctional family.

We did meet a couple a few years back in our early days and they would not have been out of place in shameless needless to say we made a sharp exit.

My own handwriting is terrible and if I try to do it any neater writing just once sentence takes me forever and although a lot of folk might doubt it lol I do have an above average IQ

Meeting people (on here or in other places) is about clicking with them, forming a relationship of some sort, however brief, shallow or focussed it may be.

I happen to be a good speller but I don't worry about spell checking or correcting my typos because on here I am more interested in what people have to say and who they are and whether I get on with them or not. Dyslexia or plain bad spelling really do not worry me one little bit; although 'text speak' (to me a deliberate butchery of English) is a bit irritating as it takes time to decipher.

Bottom line? I am interested in your friendly, open, non-judgmental and funny personality rather than in your ability to spell or use spell checker.

It's not about thinking someone's thick though, at least not for me. It's about thinking they're intellectually lazy - I mean if you can't be bothered learning the difference between "there", "they're" and "their" then it's hard to imagine you can really hold a conversation.

Before someone else says it, obviously that's prejudice talking. But prejudice is how human interaction works - deal with it!

"Theres alot more to people then there spellings , If you cant spell well it dont make you thick , lol just crap at spellings . "

It doesn't automatically make the person thick but if 'can' mean that they're not very intelligent.

If you're looking for a quick shag with very little in the way of social intercourse then the fact they may think Barack Obama is a Middle Eastern terrorist won't matter a jot. But if you want a meeting of minds AND bodies then it may matter quite a bit.

Bad spelling is only ONE indicator of someone's intelligence though - plenty of highly intelligent, socially adept people spell badly. I think the content of their profile or any messages sent say more than the spelling alone. For that reason, I wouldn't judge someone based only on their spelling.

Like other have said though, txt speak is a different matter. That's just lazy and I'd have zero tolerance for anyone who sent me a message using it.

If only it were this easy... dyslexia could be cured. Sadly it is not, and these people do struggle in life. I guess all we can do is be supportive and understanding and not make them look a fool. Spelling shmelling LOL

Bad spelling and bad punctuation irritates the hell out of me too but I know that it's ME who has the problem and I am a closet spelling Nazi(just another little OCD of mine but i don't get opinionated or inflict on others).

A lot of it is actually typos and I think you CAN tell the difference, I AM the typo queen as I'm usually in such a hurry.

(Checked and double checked)LOL

"Actually for a dyslexic the difference between "their", "there" and "two", "too" and "to" is much harder than the so-called complex words. Difficult to imagine I know but true.

Well, yes, but so what? I have difficulty getting out of bed in the mornings, still have to do it. We all find our challenges in different places but we've still got to overcome them.If only it were this easy... dyslexia could be cured. Sadly it is not, and these people do struggle in life. I guess all we can do is be supportive and understanding and not make them look a fool. (PS I am not saying that you were doing that, just in general I feel we should be supportive of other people who are not as good at some things as nobody is fabulous at everything "

the biggest struggle for a dislexic is being classed as thick or stupid because we arent that good at word perseption i was diagnosed with dislexia 30 years ago and as a qualified mechanical engineer i dont think some of us do that badly you learn to live with it and deal with it

I appreicate this as one of my kids is dyslexic and when he tried to withdraw money from his bank account in a different city he was asked to spell the name of the location onto a withdrawal slip. He asked the cashier for help and was met with a rather patronising response. Luckily my son is confident, well became confident over the years and quite publicly asked the cashier whether she was willing to help him or preferred to continue mocking a diagnosed dyslexic. It went very quiet in the bank and on his way out a couple of people smiled at him and said "well done" - I guess that is why I feel strongly about people making fun of other people's weaknesses - we all have some... somewhere ...?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

One of my favourite spelling errors on here is defiantly for definitely. Sometimes it works in the sentence and I smile.

I do grimace at ect instead of etc, though, as I read it as electroconvulsive therapy rather than et cetera.

"Lol, someone pointed out a spelling error i had made, and now they block me so i cant respond to their comment...sad people.!!! Thay maybe was thinking you was after doing a post on spelling and having errors in your profile ... Takes all sorts and thats what you get on fab a real mix and that go for spellings too.

Do you realise the chances of anyone from fab ever meeting you again have seriously dropped as you spelt they wrong lol "

Looking at your profile pisc, we don't care what your spelling is like - just move about 450 miles closer..... Lol!!

I struggled with both of those for years! one of my friends just pointed out the word 'finite' was in the middle of it and that has stuck ever since

The etc thing, I only realized I was doing it wrong cos it got mentioned here

There are lots of words I have to google everytime I use them...for whatever reason they just won't stick

OK, it isn't an English lesson, true, but a little care and attention to what you type goes a long way, in my opinion. Just because it's the internet, does not - I don't think- justify laziness/ knee jerk typing, and I can't think of any other situation in life where people just type, and press send without looking over what they have just put.

It's very hard to sympathise with this story. Kids get mocked by adults for just about everything they ever do wrong and most of us grow up with some minor scarring from that. In your kid's case, he has the 'D' word he can turn to to turn the situation around and frankly that seems to make him better off than the rest of us. What if he was just a bit thick? 49% of people are below average when it comes to intelligence, is it ok to mock them because they don't have a medical term for it!?

As you say, we ALL have challenges in life to deal with. Not just dyslexics.

I never suggested it was easy. The thing is though that ALL people struggle in life and yes, of course we should be supportive of one another but finding something difficult isn't an excuse for just giving up on it.
