How to stop a period

Weird question ladies but can anyone give me any advice as to delay a period while on holiday

I have been prescibed Norethiserone but heard so many bad reports about them

I dont want to be having a period before going away on a swingers holiday....not good

Any help gratefully appreciated

I've only ever had the tablets from the doc to delay a period a couple of times and had absolutely no problems at all

Ye, the pill or the jag can delay/stop them but may take a cpl of months to kick in. Also beware of weight gain! One of the things the doc neglects to mention - also wouldn't be good for your holiday. Doesn't the coil an the implant stop them too?

Women not taking 'the pill'

Norethisterone tablets can be prescribed. The dose is 5mg three times a day starting 3-4 days before a period is due. It can be continued for up to 2 weeks or so until you want to have a period. The period will normally begin 2-3 days after stopping it. Norethisterone is normally safe to take. Some women have side effects such as bloating, stomach upset, breast discomfort and reduced libido (sex drive).

How does this work

Norethisterone is a progestogen hormone. Progestogens are hormones that sustain the lining of the uterus. Normally at the time before a period there is a fall in the level of progestogen hormone in the body. When it falls below a certain level the lining of the uterus is shed as menstrual period. By taking norethisterone tablets (progestogen) the lining of the uterus is sustained until the tablet is stopped.

Hi there - I took this tablet and unfortunatly had very bad side effects but thats because I have a gall stone, for some reason it affects it. But many people I have known have taken this tablet and been fine although they all agree you will have a doozy of a period when you do stop taking it. But I reckon its worth it to have a swinging holiday Best fo Luck xxx

i'm not sure if you're already on the pill? but if so, just continue to take it without a break, till you get home ... ie no coming off for a week, no period

Made me swell too and i was constantly irritable...might work for some but defo didnt for me

A world of my own

I had no probs whatsoever taking norethisterone. Have the coil now and luckily have no probs there either, my periods were very heavy and almost immediately they became very light, they stopped completely after six months, wish I'd had it sooner.

norethisterone is brill, i've been on it for over a year now after being sterilised and having my womb lining removed. the only side effect really is weight gain with prolonged use ( gone from a size 10 to a 14 in a year ). ive used these tabs on and off for the last 6/7 years with no ill effects untill i had to take them continuously after my ops.

Have the Depoprovera jab now and haven't had a period in 6 years - total heaven.

Although I know I've been lucky as that can have its own set of side effects !

Hormonal treatment may not suit everyone.

I am very hormone sensitive, and experienced undesirable side effects.

Hence I had to resort to other methods.

Using the pill to delay a period does work very well if one can tolerate hormonal treatments

"My" experience of both the Depo injection and the implant was that both lowered sex drive to unacceptable levels.

Or it was my aftershave....

a friend of mine has the implant and hasn't had any 'monthlys' for about 6 years. I got the jag once a few years ago and jumped from size 8/10 to 12/14! Was not a happy bunny, but just shows how we all react differently. Typical I that always seem to get the bad reactions! Lol

i found the menopause a pretty good cure !! but i also had a mirena coil way back and that was fantastic..no periods at all and no babies !!

gemma had the coil and her periods stopped altogether which meant i lost my few days rest

my only advice on continuing to take a pill if you are on them is don't do it if you are on Logynon.

She tried the same thing. She ignored the 'dummy' tablets you take in sequence designed to give you a lighter period and is really messed her body up.

The tablets effect everyone differently, its a short term solution if you dont want to go to the extent of using contraceptives. I have used the pills on a few occasions and had no side effects atall, and would advice anyone to use them.

oh and forgot to say i have used the injection and know a lot of people who have also used it, one massive side effect is weight gain..........also used the implant and was best contraceptive/period stopper ever.....get it in and forget about it...much easier.
