Corona and anti inflammatory

From an nhs colleague: This is verified. I work for the NHS Pain Service inDorset. Please pass on :

We have just been sent a medical alert that no one is to use anti inflammatories (eg I brufen, Voltarol, naproxen and there are others) for pain or high temperature. Use paracetamol instead. There seems to be a link between severe cases of covid19 affecting young people with no underlying illnesses and taking anti inflammatories. Initial reports started coming from French Drs on Friday. This has been confirmed by infectious diseases consultants here - there are 4 young people in ICU in Cork who have no underlying illnesses - all were taking anti inflammatories and there are concerns this has caused a more severe illness. We have been asked to spread the message. French tv and radio apparently broadcast the same warning today..

From John Greenwood’s niece...Consultant Pediatrician in London.

Pls pass on.

No, thats fake news. There was a Lancet paper which mentions ibuprofen but there is no link. The paper is looking at the link between ACE2 receptors and the virus.

It's not fake news.

It's real news.

However, "His suggestion was criticized by some health experts, who cited the lack of publicly available evidence suggesting a link between ibuprofen and adverse effects of the coronavirus. There is currently no published scientific evidence that the virus is worsened by ibuprofen."

Fake news is an unfortunate 'Trumpism'

Be careful.

It’s not fake news!

Anti inflammatory drugs suppress your immune system, it’s typically what they are used for and have chemical up sides and down sides; if you have a muscle spasm then Ibuprofen and the like calm/suppress the nerves, that’s how they work!

Paracetamol is for pain relief and reduces body temperature, or helps to do so and doesn’t suppress immunity!

As an aside; Fab probably isn’t the best place for well being advice and whilst it’s a free world, perhaps use the myriad of genuine on line support advice if you have Cov19 symptoms!

People should't be posting medical advice on here, more so if it's just something they read off the internet.

Paracetamol is the go to medication to relieve high fevers so unless you are among the tiny minority who is sensitive/allergic to it, take it but don't over medicate. Small/frail people (50kg and below) should be taking 500mg up to 4x per 24 hours. Above that weight, 1g up to 4x per 24 hours.

If in doubt, ask a nurse, doctor, pharmacist, see leaflet.

My knowledge comes from training and years experience.

As a patient experiencing rigors (the shakes from a too high temperature 40+), paracetamol works brilliantly.

If we can't get paracetamol, what else would be effective?

I'd almost (and I repeat, almost) want to see a full ban on coronavirus threads on the forum,

And I'm aware of the irony of posting in those threads.

That I don't know as my experience in healthcare is that it has always been available. You could try products with paracetamol in them such as cold remedies (but remembering not to overdose on paracetamol). But if you cannot get them in shops, try online. Also remember larger packets are behind the counter, so ask your pharmacist for them.

I'll also add that it would be irresponsible of me to advise anything other than paracetamol such as anti-inflammatories as certain groups should avoid them. However, your pharmacist is trained in pharmaceuticals and they will ask you health related questions. They are a great community resource.

"

Cold and flue meds or decongestants

They usually contain 500mg of Paracetamol but as it’s not written in big letters all the fuckwits have left them on the shelves!

Even Panadol is still on the shelf and it’s just a brand name for Paracetamol.

Central

Search for the output from French medics this past weekend, with their conclusions.

The medical literature is a great source of reliable evidence but is a typically slow route for published info, so unlikely to carry much during a brand new disease outbreak.

Information gathering isn't bad, if you have the time and motivation.

My little boy suffers with asthma and when he has a viral wheeze or attack Ibuprofen makes it worse and most asthma sufferers are told to not take them so if this virus going around is respiratory then it could in fact be true

It could be or it could be a completely coincidental link due to the number of people with comorbidities who are prescribed NSAIDs having Covid19 complications. Follow GOV and NHS advice not Social media advice.
