Sleep apnea

So this afternoon while my dad was at my house, i nodded off on the sofa. When i woke up he said i need to book into the doctors as he noticed i stopped breathing occasionally while i was asleep.

I obviously didnt know. His ex girlfriend used to do this and she had sleep apnea, had to sleep with a mask on i think?

I have a 3 year old, a single mum and dont tend to fall asleep at night easy then my son enjoys waking up early in the morning.

So i just took me being tired in the day time due to them factors.

Has anyone else got this?

Im going to book into the doctors tomorrow and get an app, not sure what they will do tho?

They will refer you to a specialist, I had to do a sleep study at home, I'm borderline needing treatment but I refused the mask. I don't need any follow up appointments.

People i sleep with tell me the same. the first time i told my doctor ( its rarely the same doctor) they said it cant be sleep apnea cos im not over weight second time sent me for asthma test third time said get someone to take notes of times etc. Recently the latest doc said he will apply for funding to get me checked and that i will hear from the department sometime.

I would say im not holding my breath but that would somehow seem wrong ha ha.

I have it, 'F'. I have to take a machine with me, holidays, overnights etc. Some of the masks are hard to get used to, picture a spitfire pilot wearing mask etc only not black and you'll get the idea. Others are easier. Also helps with snoring. I've heart failure and sleep apnoea is a contributor! Doesn't stop me swinging all the same!

Under the Duvet

My ex had this.

He had to wear a monitor over a weekend prior to diagnosis and it registered he was actually stopping breathing hundreds of times through the night.

It was so severe that they said if he didnt agree to trying the sleep mask they could apply to the DVLA to have his licence taken off him as there was a real risk of him falling asleep at the wheel.

It took a while for him to get used to the sleep mask, there are different kinds so persever. The machine was very noisey though, it isn't very sexy.

But better than a possible heart attack or car crash I guess.

This is going back 6 or 7 years though so masks/treatment may have improved.

My neighbour has this, shes super fit so being overweight cant always be a factor (as much as the quacks would have us believe that overweight = cause for every illness known to man).

"What does the machine do ?"

It forces oxygen into your airways so they don't collapse while you're asleep

I had it quite badly for years. Eventually got it checked out to find my difficulty breathing through my nose was the problem. I had a septoplasty and a turbinate reduction and can now breath properly. Sleep apnea now cured.

There could be several things that cause it and so several solutions.

Hope you sort it soon.

People forget that just because they've paid for it and passed tests to get it, a driving licence is a privilege and never actually belongs to the driver.

Over the years people have said I have always chok-ed and stopped breathing in my sleep, mrs said it got quite bad. Docs referred me to the hospital, luckily someone had cancelled an appointment so I could get in the next week, otherwise it would have been 6 months down the line. This appointment was to just literally repeat my issues for 2 minutes to a specialist who said they'd do a sleep study.

Eventually did a sleep study and waiting ages for results to come back to basically say 'yes you stop breathing but it's not that major so we wont do anything.' In the same letter they told me to lose weight, stop smoking and reduce drinking. I weigh anything between 65-70kg, I've never smoked and probably drink once per month if that. So whomever had written that letter clearly hadnt paid attention to my particular case and had sent out a generic discharge letter.

Either way, yes, go to doctors and they'll refer you

My ex has it. It was progressing for the worse over time and now he sleeps with a mask. My current husband has it too, but it hasn't changed over the years so he doesn't need treatment. Freaks me out though when I wake up at night and he's not breathing and his skin feels cold because he had no blanket on for a while

I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnoea back in 2012. However, my specialist gave me some options, eg, losing weight, part of which was to reduce the size of my shirt collar.

He said if you have a shirt collar size of 17" or more, you're predisposed to having sleep apnoea more than someone who is slimmer.

I managed to lose weight over the next 4 months and brought my shirt neck size to 15" where it has remained.

It's also recognised as a Disability in it's own right.

By all means get checked out.

Yes you lack of sleep is the reason. Your body is going into such a deep sleep that’s why your doing it. Everyone does do it at some point in their life.

You need to try and get better sleep and sort why your child is waking too.

I have been on CPAP treatment for 3 years, I probably get 8 hours sleep a night now. Before I was diagnosed I woke up 5-10 times a night for the loo.

Sleep apnoea can’t be a big contributing factor in stroke. I had to tell DVLA,they say as long as I am on CPAP, no issues with me driving. I’m feeling healthier now. However I do feel rough when I sleep without my mask.

Get checked out for dysfunctional breathing, as this never gets any TV or radio publicity.

Mrs KC has sleep apnoea & has been using a mask for 20+ years. This is a very serious disorder & I'd urge anyone with symptoms to seek the help of a specialist.

Sadly there are several cases a year where adults die because of untreated apnoea & more from other conditions exacerbated by this.

Sleeping with a mask doesn't look sexy but neither does a corpse.

I've lost 6 stone since diagnosis and the clinic keeps asking to retest me as there's a good chance my sleep apnoea has gone now but I'm so attached to my machine I keep swerving it! I don't want to give it up!

Good luck to all those going for tests soon, there is a great group on FB called Hope2Sleep Support group which is great for asking questions and finding out stuff.

Loads of people have sleep apnoea and are risking their lives not being tested or treated. 4 friends of mine have gone on to be diagnosed after sleeping over at mine and I picked up the snoring and gasping!

Got my diagnosis 2 years ago after going for an overnight sleep study. Stsrted using a CPAP machine right away. The difference (and improvement) was immediate and i never looked back.

"I had it quite badly for years. Eventually got it checked out to find my difficulty breathing through my nose was the problem. I had a septoplasty and a turbinate reduction and can now breath properly. Sleep apnea now cured.

There could be several things that cause it and so several solutions.

Hope you sort it soon.

That's interesting, I have a deviated septum and sinus issues, maybe mine is caused by that. "

MRI tests and an external exam will be useful. I had a operation to fix it: it will take away the ability to smell for a long time.

"Yes I have this, my solution (recommended by my specialist) is to retrain myself to sleep on my side that way the airways stay open and the apnoea doesn't happen. Unfortunate side effect is arm going dead and dribbling

I have slept on my side for 20 years or more and I still have sleep apnea. I would change your specialist "

Folks are different, what causes mine may not be the same for you. It was a solution suggested by my specialist along with a gum shield thing, both of these individually alter how my jaw relaxes when asleep and so prevent my tongue from blocking my airway. It's a solution that worked for me and has avoided me going down the CPAP route.

"What does the machine do ?

It forces oxygen into your airways so they don't collapse while you're asleep "

To be precise it is a CPAP machine. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine. It blows air into your nose and or mouth as you sleep. This overcomes the risk of the throat closing up in deep sleep which occurs particularly on folks that are overweight. My wife used to have it and the lack of sleep was very debilitating.

"Fat or out of shape!" How many people have thought that their tongue may need some toning out, insteaad of their whole body?

I've seen a video that reckons tongue exercise might help. What do you think?

"What does the machine do ?"

Forces air into you to keep you breathing. Also helps snoring, which can wake yourself up quite a lot, giving you a crap, interrupted sleep.

Hi there.

I got diagnosed finally at 36 i complained most my life to docs. They kept saying nothing is wrong they know what they are doing.

I got admitted in to hospital when i was 36 and ended up staying there for 3 months as they found out i had sleep apnea. They kept me in and did all the tests and gave me a machine which i call the wife.

I have had the machine for 7 years nearly now.

Feels good to have the machine.

Sleep apnea is pretty dangerous if it is not caught soon

I nod off constantly and and when I wake I feel wide awake but within in 1 minute I drop asleep again then wake and the same cycle feel wide awake but within 1-minute drop asleep.

No problem with breathing.

Once my son counted 46 times I nodded in 1 hour

Sounds unbelievable

Do you snore? Whilst asleep Stop snoring then gasp for breath? Sleep apnea make sufferes very weary indeed. You never really acheive rem sleep.

I got diagnosed about 10 years ago, I would stop breaking about 57 times an hour and blood sat would be down at around 70%

I was given a cpap machine, and on the first night using it had the best sleep litteraly of my life
