Joining the forums is a good start to getting to know people.

If I knew the secret of a good first message, I'd be happy to share, but I'm equally clueless.

You can read the profile, craft a well balanced polite message and the recipient will delete it unread, because she has had 400 other messages that day.

Don't resort to cut-and-paste, people can always tell.

I haven't looked at your profile, but a lot of people check it out before reading your profile. Does it stand out, and show why you are the person to meet.

There's hundreds of threads of advice about profiles.
